Well, your method is all techy and impressive and stuff, but I usually just stick my head out the window and measure by how fast my lips are flapping (BPM, beats per minute as they slap together).

Yeah, maybe your way is more accurate now that I think about it. Plus you probably don't have numb lips when you get home.

Maybe you should change your name to "Aerosmith".

Did you tried the hidden menu ? maybe there is something about the turbo.

You have to push the start button and the trip reset button simultaneously for a couple seconds(not pushing brake pedal)then ad the sum of the five last digits in the vin (like 5 if if you have 11111) and enter the sum in the right sub-menu.

I didnt try it.

Does anybody know how this works.

The only things that come up are:

Main Menu

01 ID
02 System Test
03 Test End
04 Unlock

I can cycle through with the trip button, but nothing else changes anything.

Yes, see this post for instructions. I've followed these and it works

BTW, to enter the sum of the last 5 digits, you have to use the trip button and press it x times

As you see I get the Main Menu. Do I then use the trip reset button x times(x=addition of VIN #'s)? If so do I have to be on any particular menu selection?

For me I did:

1. Press and hold trip and start until "main menu" appeared
2. Press trip 4 times until '04 unlock' highlighted
3. Press and hold while on '04 unlock' until next menu shows
4. Next menu asks for a code
5. Press trip as many times as x (code will count up)
6 When you get to the right number do another press and hold on trip and multiple more menus appeared

Might have the words/description a little off, perhaps I should video it...

Now this works!!! Thanks

I did manage to add the "Service Menu" for CIC settings to the "Setting Menu" on the iDrive for Navigation, Telephone and Gracenote.

Now that some time has passed, what all things have you find in the secret menu and have you used it?

I mean, could you have some nice info on iDrive screen, such as oil temp etc.?

Every turbo-engine car I’ve owned has either had a factory-installed gauge or I’ve installed an Autometer electronic boost/vacuum gauge myself. Getting the required wiring harness for the Autometer gauge installed is not a trivial job, since it means running a cable through the firewall.

Anyway, I thought a way around having to do that on the X3 might be to see if the boost pressure value was available through the OBD-II port. The pressure reading is certainly something the engine control CPU monitors, and many vehicles do allow it to be read out via the OBD-II port. Usually the reading is accessed by checking the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) value. Unfortunately, the X3’s port does not respond to a query for a return of the MAP value. It may not be there at all, or BMW may supply it only under a special (secret) query request.

Anyway, as long as I was connected to the OBD-II system, I decided to see what WAS available on the X3.

The X3 uses the CAN 11-bit protocol.

Here is a list of the digital values that can be read in real time on a X3 35i using standard CAN queries:

% engine load
engine coolant temperature (deg. F.)
short term fuel trim
long term fuel trim
RPM (resolution on X3 = 1rpm)
MPH (resolution on X3 0.1 MPH)
timing advance
intake air temperature (resolution 0.1 deg. F.)
mass air flow sensor (g/s)
absolute throttle position (%)
oxygen sensor voltage
run time since last start
distance traveled with check engine light on
fuel pressure
evaporative purge (%)
fuel level (% of full)
number of warm ups since engine check light cleared
distance traveled since engine check light cleared
barometric pressure (ambient only – not MAP)
catalytic converter temperature (deg. F.)
battery voltage
accelerator pedal position (i.e.: more than 1%)
mass air flow (calculated)
instanianeous MPG
average MPG
average gallons per hour
run time (general)
distance (miles)
fuel level (reads to 0.1 gal.)
distance to empty (DTE miles)
time to empty (TTE hours:min)
average MPH (current trip)
average MPG (current trip)
fuel used (current trip)
average gallons/hour
run time (trip)
distance (trip)
distance on oil change
distance to service

There probably are others, but they likely require special BMW coding.

It is interesting and fun to drive around with a monitor connected showing some of those readings in real time. I just wish that the manifold pressure (turbo boost) reading was available.
....let me guess UI Engineering alumni..........
