Sapphire black M-Sport: black or aluminum roof rails?

Hello all:

Newbie here. I have a Sapphire Black/Oyster M Sport X3 35 on order (very excited!), and have a little dilemma.

When I gave the information to my service advisor, I ordered the M Sport package, which in my mind (and according to the X3 brochure) means that I'm supposed to get both the shadowline window trim and high-gloss black roof rails.

However, somewhere in the process, my order apparently came out saying that, in addition to the M Sport package, I also ordered aluminum satin roof rails. (I thought those only came with the X Sport package, but apparently they can be ordered as a separate item, even with an M Sport package). What's more, even though the website lists the car as still being in production, the service advisor is telling me that it's too late to change the order.

So, a couple of questions:

1. I've seen plenty of pictures of sapphire black M sport X3s with black rails. Does anyone have a picture of one (an M sport, please, so it has the shadowline window trim) with aluminum rails? Or, have you seen one and can you give me your opinion?

(As an aside, I think the issue here is that if the window trim and the roof rails match - either because they are both aluminum (like the X sport) or both black (M sport), that would look "right". I'm concerned about how it would look if they were different.)

2. I'm wondering how best to address this issue if I decide that I really want black rails. It seems to me that changing them out shouldn't take more than an hour or two, and that that should be something that the dealership service department ought to be willing to do (preferably at no cost to me) once the car arrives there. Any thoughts?

Many thanks!

How do things work in the US? In the UK, when you order a custom built BMW, you get given a contract which includes a print of the specification of your car: you then sign the specification/contract to say that you accept that is what you are ordering. The trim and roof rail materials will be within that specificcation.

I have a CB M Sport on order and specified aluminium trim and aluminium roof rails. The dealership originaly got this wrong (on the specification/contract), but I picked it up and they changed it before I signed it.

My Audi dealer did the same mistake on my Q5 but I got the rails replaced at their cost. My X3 is black with black window trim but the rails are aluminum and I don't like it, I have gotten used to it but go for all black or all aluminum! It will give the car a "clean" look.

I think the aluminum rails provide great contrast to black paint as they highlight the kidney grilles and the wheels. I wouldn't worry about the rails not matching the window trim.

If you do decide to make a change, I would recommend you make the dealer correct it before you take delivery - just let them know that you won't sign anything until the car has black rails on it.

I ordered mine (DSB) with the aluminum rails, I think they look nice and pop against the dark color. The black would just blend in and you wouldn't notice em. Makes me think of the mirrors on the Audi S cars, they're the brushed aluminum and I think they look great.

The aluminum is a $250 option. I would check your order and see if it had it on there or not, and see if you paid for it. If it's on there and you signed it, they probably won't change them for you after the truck is built and delivered.

Also something to think about, apparently it's a lot of work to remove and swap the rails, the headliner has to come off, etc. I wouldn't want my dealership to tear apart my brand new truck that much just for different color rails, who knows what would happen and how many rattles you'll have.

I placed an order of an M sport too and had the same question. According to my dealer the black some standard with the package, however you can request aluminium.

X3 Roof Rails

I just saw a Alpine White with the M Sport Package and the black roof rails and it looks awesome! So much so that I wanted the black roof rails for my wife's Alpine White X3 that is on order....but was told that it is not available for the base model, only the Sport Package.

I was thinking it would be better to have the aluminum satin roof rails but then I actually got a chance to see them on a black X3 side by side with my high-gloss black roof rails and I realise I made the right choice not interfering with the look. The high-gloss black roof rails really look sweet !!
