Bought an M5 last year - love it but...

...it was a beast in the snow! So, before winter rolls around again, I just started looking for an all wheel drive for the winters (Ohio based). Thought I'd get a '09 (ish) something or other, thinking I'd be paying around 30-35K - well, visit to local BMW dealership has me smitten with the new '11 X3 xDrive35i..... (this is exactly how I ended up buying my M5 last year too - went in to look at another vehicle and drove out with the M5 beast!). I'd never owned a BMW before buying my M5, so dived right into the deep end. Anyways, back to my question - I'm smitten by the looks, feel and tech package of the new X3 -So what better place to ask for advice/ words of wisdom / words of caution etc. I also just spent some time looking at the pics of other members new X3 M package cars - I know if I do buy one, the M is a must!

Reading my post above, you may figure I'm already fully onboard with buying one - my caution is I threw caution to the wind on my M5 and it landed me in a heep of trouble (literally) last winter....

Just curious but did you have snow tires on the M5? It makes a world of difference.

Well, obviously, the magnificent X3 xDrive35i won't go anything like the M5 does so test drive first and see if you can live without the BLISTERING acceleration. That said, the 35i does shift!
Would you ever take the X3 off road? Really? Be honest! Sure it will be better than the 5er in the snow but think of all the days in a year and give me a figure of how many days snow is on the ground. The X3 is a great car but the M5 is awesome and the E60 will always be one of the all time greats.

Buy a beater or rent a car for the real bad forects. Don't dump a M5 for any reason but unreliability !!

Being born and bred in England, I know what the English winters can bring, however moving to Ohio, USA and their wonderful winters, although beautiful on postcards, are just dumb crazy when it comes to navigating the roads here when winter hits. Not even contemplating dumping the M5, just need a reliable ride for when winter comes around again. (it's either that or moving before next winter comes, which was a serious consideration after getting through last winter - yuck!) Was thinking of picking up a 30k ish pre owned X3 but a) hubby hated them and b) liking the sharp contrast of the new X3...

Hehe, I guess there's something about the F25 in person, because I had the same experience. Never owned a BMW. Went in to talk about the upcoming F30 and was told they wouldn't have any for sale until June, and no X-drive until fall (I live in the northeast). I was gutted and ready to leave when I sat in the F25 and was immediately smitten.

The X5M is AWD so I can't imagine the new X3M would be any different though who the hell knows when it'll actually be available. I say get the X3 35i for now and then trade it in for the X3M if you like the package but want even more power. That's my plan! My X3 35i arrives at the dealer next week :-)
