HUD Display
New to the forum and BMW autos, although I owned a BMW motorcycle for many years. Had our X3 a little more than a week and very happy with the decision, but I have what may be an unusual question.
When I'm driving with my sunglasses on, the HUD display all but disappears. I also have HUD in my Corvette and don't have this problem. Just wondering if there is an adjustment to the display that I can make, and if others have had similar issues. Thanks in advance. Keith |

This happens only on polarized sunglasses. Tilt your head and you will see the difference.
This is fixed by selecting glasses with diagonal polarization. |

Interesting. The last couple of BMWs I've test-driven - a couple of X1s and a LCI 3-Series wagons - had HUD and I had no problems seeing the HUD in both vehicles in my cheap polarised sunnies. I'd assume the HUD in the X3 would be the same. As F30ed suggested, try different glasses.

The HUD uses a light spectrum (glare factor) that quality polarized lenses simply cut out.
I ordered my X3 without HUD for this very reason, and also didn't want a hole above my instrument cluster collecting dust.

Keith,
You might try adjusting the rotation in the settings for the HUD. This may make the display more visible when wearing polarized glasses. From my X3 manual: "Setting the rotation On the Control Display: 1. "Settings" 2. "Head-Up Display" 3. "Rotation" 4. Turn the controller. Settings are stored for the profile currently in use." |

I have this issue with my digital camera when I am wearing sunglasses, landscape photos are fine when using the screen but tilt the camera to portrait view the screen disappears!

Immediately ran into this problem last March when I took delivery of my new X3. I did try rotating the image but that did not help at all.
I then tried to get an optician to make a pair of polarized sunglasses with the polarization plane rotated 90 degrees. I was repeatedly told it could not be done so I ordered a pair on non polarized lenses for a new Rayban frame. My lenses are prescription progressive bifocals and the non polarized lenses work fine. The HUD is great and only wish it displayed more information. Not having polarized sunglasses to make it useful has not at all proved to be a problem because I noticed for general use the non-polarized lenses make no consequential difference. |

I thought I didn't really need/want the HUD, but now that I've used it, I love it! The simplest and cheapest solution is to get a pair of non-polarized sunglasses and leave them in the car.
I find polarized sunglasses will sometimes not work with cellphones, so I don't bother purchasing polarized sunglasses anymore.
