got mine - xDrive30d

Got mine today. Everything seems fine.

One feature is missing, but that is my fault: No folding mirrors. Since I don't like auto-dimming mirrors I did order them but didn't realize the folding mirrors are bundled. Ask my dealer for a proposal to retrofit the folding ears.

Delivery was already on Dunlop Winter Sport 3D.

First impressions are very good. LOL! - 100kmh/62mph @ 1400 rpm. Quite nice.

Did about 300km/186mls today, mixed traffic, inner city traffic jam, fast driving on some small country roads in the hills, some autobahn with 140kmh/90mph max, was raining half the time: Resulting in 7.8 l/100km = 30mpg.

Everything works nicely, the engine-gearbox combo is WOW! Does 90mph @ 2000 rpm. Have some slight wind noise on the left side A-pillar from around 60mph on, but not always.

Haven't found my perfect driving position yet.

Tires are good, comfy and pretty silent (@ about 8 deg C = 46 deg F).

Some more observations:

# There should be a button for the electric tailgate in the cockpit.

# Material quality: Some people criticized the plastic of the lower door pockets; I think they are not great (not Audi level), but what really is a joke is that small flip-out tray under the light switch. That material is like taken from an egg crate.

# "Hofmeister kink" from the inside: That raise in the belt line makes me think there is another car hiding close to my blind spot every time I do a lane change. Will get used to that I guess.

# The ride is surprisingly sporty, with very little body roll in faster curves. But at the same time quite comfortable and it soaks up potholes quite nicely (even on RF). I observed a very slight tendency for pitch oscilations over short ripples (that might change with a little load, and is certainly a question of speed and frequency).

# That energy efficiency thing needs some getting used to. The car does not "sail" (as Porsche calls that now) very well. We have a long stretch of downhill autobahn here where with my Audi coupe I easily reached 120kmh/75mph in idle, the X3, though quite a bit heavier, gets only up to 90kmh/55mph.

# The steering is very nice, just very nice. Can't yet say it has an awful lot of feedback but the weighting is just lovely.

# Xenon lights give a wide and bright beam pretty far out, perfect for wine region village nights with drunk folks and cats populating the streets. I have those swivelling front lights and they feel very natural, in fact I didn't notice their activity at all.

There is one low down that is not super obvious. Happy hunting! Oh and we share the same tyres and I am happy with them too.

It's not just me then! Tends to be when I glance over my shoulder to double-check that the inside lane is clear. Keep thinking there's another vehicle just off the rear wheel.

There should be a lift-gate button on the lower left trim area...near where the parking brakes used to be.

Congrats on the car and on making what's obviously the best color choice.

Here's a pic of our (2) Vermilion Red X3s.

Here is the "Speed-in-Gears"chart for the 30d & 35d. I previously published charts for the 28i & 35i.

Your tach./speedo readings may not match exactly because BMW tends to calibrate their speedometers approximately 1.5 to 2% high.

Yip, all according to the instruments.

With 245/50-18 8th is 14.2 to 1 overall, 7th is 17.6 to 1.

720km/450mls so far @ 8 ltr/100km = 30mpg in mixed traffic with quite a bit inner city and (European) town driving.

Folding mirrors can't be retrofitted with reasonable effort.

Sometimes the dash center speaker is the source of slight creaking over harsh joints and deep set manhole covers.
