I just recieved a google alert{link below} for this story. I am not sure I believe it's true, but thought I would post to the forum in case someone has had a confirming experience and to at least keep this community on the cutting edge of hysteria.

If I mistook the accelerator for the brake pedal I would claim unintended acceleration too.

Assuming its an AUTO model then yes sounds like the brain mixed up its left and right pedals!

This is likely driver error as no one on these boards or elsewhere has reported their vehicle exhibiting any type of issue like this (at least that I've seen).

Best assumption would be that the stupid electronic shifter thing confused her.

or she might have hit "Accel/Resume" button for cruise control from the steering wheel incase if she set the cruise-speed previously...

These terms are being used way too much nowadays, unintended acceleration, sex addition, etc.

If it's anything like the Audi 5000 incidents, it's her fault. Unlike the Toyota scandal a few years ago, which was an actual technical issue, the Audi issue was later reported to be as a result of driver error upon realizing that the gas and brake pedal were similar in size. Once Audi spaced them out for the next model years, no incidents of unintended acceleration were reported.

Sounds like someone isn't used to the awkward pedal positioning in this X3.

On some Diesel cars, if the level of lubricant is too high, something that can happen is that it's sucked up in the engine and then starts "auto burning", with no control at all. There are several videos on youtube like this:

The accident is more frequent nowadays, because of the systems to burn the residual particles in the exhaust. This happens by raising the temperature of the combustion, by injecting extra Diesel for a short period. If this filter "regeneration" happens to often, for a car that is used mostly in city traffic, the result is that some of the extra diesel leaks in the engine lubricant and this increases its level beyond the max.

This said, I don't think it was such a case, also because, correct me if I'm wrong, there are no Diesel X3 in the States!
