Park Distance Control w/o the Rear View Camera option

If I configure X3 with Park Distance Control and without the rear view camera option, How is the distance information reported/displayed to the driver?

The PDC doesn't really use the rear view camera - so I'm thinking your screen will show the graphic of the car from the top with graphic indicators when things get close. You'll also hear the beeping quicken as you get closer to an object.

Something like what you see here except in my car it's verticle so there's room to show the rear camera view.

Yep, that's exactly as it shows, with the only difference that the car is represented vertically. And of course, no rear view camera image.

I ordered my 28i with park distance control but without the rear camera. I live in Boston and do plenty of city driving/parking. The park distance control is great.

I am kinda regretting not ordering the camera with my build... hopefully pdc will work well enough.

That said, i've already started researching the required camera and module as a retro fit.

The PDC works great (...but keep us posted on the retrofit...)

I took a couple of pics with my crappy phone....if front and rear PDC is activated you get (I think) the rear as the large display and the front shown on the small car image.

Note the car is correctly oriented, which is rather useful - unlike the version with the camera.

You have two pics that show the front and the read PDC on the large display. How does it know which one to show?

Also, what do you mean that it is correctly orients unlike the version with the camera. Isn't the one with the camera also showing the verticle car on the right? That's how it is on mine.

I've not analysed it in detail. I guess it shows the first PDC activation on the larger image and then if the other end activates it uses the smaller image.

That was an ill-considered comment I made, it's ages since I looked at a screen with a backup camera. I'd looked at the image below showing a widescreen view with the car east-west and made an assumption this was to do with a camera. It simply seems to be widescreen.....I can't imagine how east-west orientation could be good vs north-south. Maybe it's BMW mock-up and not real?

When you put the gearbox in reverse, it activates PDC and shows the rear.

It shows the front when gearbox is in forward D on following condition:
a) PDC is manually activated
b) PDC is activated by going in reverse, and then putting gearbox in forward D.

Ahh Clive - thanks - that cleared it up. Yes, I guess that picture is indeed a mock up or at least that is how it used to be. I agree - vertical makes it far more intuitive to me.

Thanks for the info on how it knows to show which part. That's pretty interesting itself.

To further clarify how this works.....

The fuzzy pic below shows what happens when I reverse out of my drive. The rear sensors activate as I reverse between my gate posts - this showed on the large image before I took the pic below. As the front of the car reached the gates the front sensors activated and this was then shown on the smaller car image.

This was all totally automatic.
