Who Recommends Chip Guards?
- Clear, virtually undetectable 3M material placed on the front 9 inches of the vehicle
- Keeps the vehicle clean of chip marks and bugs from highway driving $500 CAD + Taxes Anyone recommends it? |

I like them but only for vehicles that will see year-round use and especially for going over the mountain passes here in BC in winter (which usually have a lot of small stones, gravel on them, and paint/windshield chips are guaranteed).
Shop around as there are levels of quality and pricing available. IMO, the most important thing is making sure the installer knows what he/she is doing. It's not a DIY project. I will likely get mine done for the 35i, but I have not always had it done for other cars (eg I did do the M3 as it was not going to see winter use).

You will have to check in your local area for alternatives.

I'd only do the leading edge of the hood if there were any worries about chips -- that's the most vulnerable area. The plastic portion of the front end is already much more chip resistant than the hood, and is not nearly as vulnerable.
For the first time in years, I did not put 3M film on my 07 RDX, 08 S200, or 2011 Z4. So far, no regrets. WIll probably skip it on the X3 too. |

I had it installed from the dealer. It covers 2 feet from the front of the hood + 1 foot on both sides of the gap between the wheel and the front lights, and also on the back of the side mirrors.
All of that for 450$. It's not visible when clean, but dirt will stick to it more than metal, so it is visible now after a few days. (got it last friday) |

I had it installed on two feet of the hood and front fenders, the entire front bumper, lights, under side of the hood where the wipers touch when raised, door handle cups and the lower rockers. I planned on having it installed on the wheel arches and rear bumper but my installer ran out of product. There are numerous threads with complaints of paint chips on the rockers, wheel arches and behind the rear wheels of X5 and X6 M sports. I wanted to be proactive in case the X3 M sport has the same issue. I will have it installed in the other areas once the nano-fusion is available. |

Was going to get mine done now, but found out that the template for the MSport front end not yet available at my suppliers. Have to wait on that, but should be available soon. Regular, non-MSport is available.

Here's a copy of my previous post on this matter:
Now you've hit something near and dear to my heart...I had this installed on my car and am quite happy with the results. I've got the Deep Sea Blue and I know I needed as much protection for my baby as possible. I'll admit that I didn't get the hood 100% covered - only the first 20" because that's what they recommended based on their experience and the cost savings - and the ONLY thing that's visible is a thin line across the hood that you have to look for. It's certainly not something that people walk by and notice. (They'd most definitely notice paint chips) My place does custom coverings only. Anything pre-cut would leave too much room for error. All I know is I've got it, I'm very happy about it and I would most certainly recommend it to anyone. http://avoclearbra.com/Fundamentals.html |

Oh yeah - They did the entire front bumper, 20" of hood, the mirrors, door edges (in case I open the door and hit something) and they even did the inside of the door handles in case someone has rings or keys in their hand while opening the door. Very pleased with this stuff because I've had very bad chips on other cars.

I did my hood 24", A-Pillars up to sunroof, rear luggage area, lights, mirrors and like Tuco44 just waiting for the MSport bumper and rocker panels to be designed.
