Dinan N55 performance upgrade

Just checked Dinan's site and looks like they are slowly releasing the N55 stage 2 software upgrade. It is currently available for the X5/X6.

http://www.dinancars.com/shop/D900-3...29.aspx#page=1

Slightly disappointed with the power output, I was expecting similar figures compared to the N54.

I was slightly dissappointed with the output as well. I am seriously considering installing this on my X3 once it is available.

Snow was crazy today! Lake Shore Drive was pretty bad but nothing the X3 couldn't handle.

Anyways, $2000 for the tune.... I don't think thats worth it at all.

Well the m-sport is a couple of grand and it's only lipstick. At least this is more power.

Dinan's stuff costs so much and doesn't give crazy hp figures because they actually warranty their products.
They spend a ton of R&D time before it's released.
I have a bunch of their products on my car too. Well worth spending the extra money for peace of mind.

Dinan has never been known for reliable products (ala the BMW-Dinan fallout which has since been repaired) but their tunes aren't bad from a reliability standpoint. And the fact that you get the warranty is nice, however you look at the pitiful power gains TO THE CRANK and the $2000 price tag and you see why so many people just get a juice box for a quarter of the price and get 30+more horsepower...remember their published gains are to the wheels. And there is always the possibility that BMW and Dinan could have another fallout and you would no longer have the BMW warranty anyway, but Dinan would still cover any problems and problems with this arent likely anyways.

I think you got that backwards. BMW and most other manufacturers quote numbers at the crank, which aren't reduced by transmission inefficiencies. As for Dinan quoting crank numbers for a pure engine tune makes sense as you can compare apples to apples.

huh? okay that has nothing to do with what I was saying. I was simply stating that JB showes gains at the wheels, which is better, and gets much better gains at the crank and at the wheels. That was probably not the best explanation but either way its not important. JB=2x gains at 1/4 cost

Sure, but you're still running a piggyback that you had to wire in yourself with the very real chance of having your warranty voided. If you were talking Cobb or any other flash tune (not to mention how many are actually available for the N55 currently), how much are you going to pay? Then you factor in how much keeping the warranty is worth to you. Dinan's one of the first to market with a tune and they're matching the warranty for you. Most Dinan dealers are your BMW dealer, so if you do have a problem, you're only dealing with your dealer.

You made a valid point regarding price/performance and I just wanted to clarify crank versus wheel power gains.

As for value, that's very subjective. If I had a 2004 335i I could give a shit about Dinan's conservative tune that won't wreck my engine or void my warranty. I'd slap a JB4 on there and let the chips fall where they may. But considering I still owe $54k on my 2012 X3 then suddenly the extra $1450 for a decent enough power gain and a warranty to fall back on is kind of an attractive proposition.

Oh I understand its a matter of personal choice and totally your opinion if you think its worth it..I just wanted to point out other options..but for most people with X3s this is what they are going to want because of the warranty.
