BMW- Stolen via OBD, is X3 affected?
Just ordered my new X3 last week- then read the following article. Should I be worried? Does the X3 use the same system security as the 1 Series in the article?
Steve had CCTV cameras pointed on his BMW and they recorded the thieves smashing the BMW's window and accessing the car's 'OBD port' in the footwell to reprogramme a spare key. A void on the alarm meant the thieves could smash the glass and put their arm into the car without it going off. http://cars.uk.msn.com/news/new-bmws-at-risk-of-theft |

It currently affects the whole E series lineup.
I don't think it affects the F series yet, but I'd it did, BMW won't let this easily slide.

Uganda and Zimbabwe no doubt full of premium cars belonging to people from Surrey I like the theories on why countries chose to drive on the left or right. Gentlemen on horseback pass each other on the left to leave the right arm free to shake hands with or lance the oncoming traveller

I heard people mount their horses on the left, so the stone steps for this were on the LHS leading to RHD. Who knows...

BMW, like any other business, will indeed do nothing unless there is an overwhelming monetary advantage to do so. I suspect the population of cars stolen using the OBD access method described above is very very small compared to the number of cars produced. On the other hand, the cost to mitigate the problem alomost certainly includes some sort of mod to every susceptable car out there. That cost probably enormously exceeds the cost of the cars stolen or, more imprtant to BMW, any adverse effect on demand for their cars. In other words, do not fault BMW for ignoring the problem when no responsible executive cvould justify fixing the problem on already sold vehicles.

My dealer has just confirmed to me that cars with keyless ignition are not effected by the key cloning issue. It seems only to be cars where you slide the key into a slot. Haven't a clue why but they must have changed something when they went keyless.

My car went for its service today and the dealer confirmed the same to me too. It is apparently different technology that is unaffected by the issue.
Interestingly he was saying that the real issue BMW are wrestling with is where these guys are getting the blank keys from. They should be kept very secure throughout the whole supply chain but clearly this is failing somewhere. |
