Just bought a 2013 X3 28i for the wife...
Should have researched first, now I'm panicking about timing chain. Has 54k miles on it and has had one owner + all dealer maintained. How widespread is this issue?
I've done the googling, but I know people (including me) get excited about things. Thanks |

You say you have googled? That is where you will get your information. Although it is a world wide problem, you will not get many with first hand experience of it on forums. Some cars do hundreds of thousands of miles without failure.

there may be a extended warranty plan out there for your vehicle.

The timing chain issue is a F25 28i issue, and only for certain year(s)not a F25 35i issue. 35i has its own issues (oil filter gasket, thermostat, water pump) but all are only a fraction in cost of the 28i timing chain issue.

I love you man! All those F25 35i issues are child's play compared to the timing chain. They aren't as expensive and none of them will kill your engine unless you ignore them. Thermostat seems to be the most common based on what I saw on service records when I was shopping for 2014 F25 35is.

Better to have bought the 35i. The whole experience has forced us to look at other options than BMW. For us it really means Break My Wallet. The durability of that 1st generation of the N20 is questionable. If I was in your shoes, get the guide replaced ASAP. $1000 bucks vs a new engine is peanuts. I've got a 2013 BMW X3 28i with about 57k and no issues. But, I never drive with the auto start/stop on so I just push the button to disable it whenever I drive because I thought the rumor was that was adding additional strain to the timing belt.
