Light Painting with my X3

Hey guys. I recently picked up some LED fill lights over at Helix Camera and Video at 310 S. Racine (for all you Chicago guys), and I decided the best way to break them in would be to try them out on my X3. I've read about light painting to showcase objects rather than to draw pretty little hearts in the night sky (awww.), so I thought I'd give it a shot. It's hardly perfect, and obviously I need more practice, but I'm rather pleased with the results considering this was my first try. Ignore the extra light streaks--remember, I'm new at this.

Anyways, here's the best one of the bunch. I think you'll appreciate it.

Nice job Judd, very creative. See if you can get far enough from the city to capture stars in the background.

Thanks! Planning on heading towards Kenilworth or Glencoe so I can get by the lake without obstructive trees or city lights. I have a house in Lakeside, MI, but I really can only make time to go there in the summer.

Looks good is it a "Paint program" of some sort?.

Nice work Judd... I used to be a photographer (now only shoot rarely) and loved all the experimentation. Assume you were behind the camera when casting the light streaks on the body? It's a great exposure and really captures the X3 beautifully. I actually dig the saturation on the trees too.

Nope! Just two lights and a long exposure.

It was a little bit of both. The shutter was open for I think 30 seconds, so as long as I kept myself in shadows, running in front of the camera was no problem; I was told wearing black would prevent from any ghosting as well. I had myself quite the audience as I flailed my arms left and right with the LEDs in hand.

LOL. I figured you must have been behind the lens, or the streaks that we see reflected on the paint would be accompanied by mid-air streaks in front of the vehicle.

Keep playing and posting them... good stuff.

there should be a photo art sub forum for the X3

I bet BMW could use some of the shots for their own marketing...

you were using a prime(fixed) lens. I can tell by the 1.4 glass.

There's no substitute for fixed focal distance lenses.
