X3 x28 stalled on test drive
Was out with dad shopping for a new vehicle for him today and we decided to take an X3 out for a spin. I was driving. Gave it a good boot, and it did show plenty of promise with 240hp inline 6 and xdrive + 8sp, but the CEL came on right when I was slowing down for a stop sign.
When I was going to accelerate again I had zero response only to notice that the engine had cut out, so I restarted and was able to get going again without any problems since. Has anybody else experienced this? It was quite peculiar. There was no warning or gong or anything, just that tiny little CHECK ENGINE light and the fact that the tach went to 0. On another note - also drove an X1 2.0T and xdrive + 8sp. Drove this before the X3. It can move! |

I have read alot of this kind of issue. It is the fuel saving tech of BMW that will automatically cut the engine power to conserve gas. If you dont like this feature switch the transmission to "Sport". That will fix it.

Don't think so. I think you are thinking of the gas saving feature that the Europeans get.

I think this is incorrect. Euro cars may have the "stop/start" feature, but it does not work that way as described. This event was some kind of failure.

This is the first that I've heard anybody with this issue. You could check with the dealer to see if it threw a fault code when it happened.

It also has it's own indicator, not the Check engine light (CEL) as the poster described. |

The "start/stop" feature is NOT on X3s sold in NA.

It may be the faulty transfer case issue that was mentioned in this forum before. If it is an early model, it is consistent with the fault given during acceleration.

Actually the transfer case fault was completely different than this. That gave an I-drive warning as well as dash lights and told the driver to brake moderately and get to dealer for service. Not the same.

IMO this is not the same as the transfer case issue and it isn't a stop/start issue (as the car wasn't even fitted with stop/start). I haven't seen anything on stalling like this on this forum.
Re. stop/start being an issue, I've been using it for 5 months and it's never not started after stopping. It sometimes doesn't stop when you think it should but this is hardly a problem

It would be worrisome if one was stop at a traffic crossing, half way thru an intersection, or near railroad track. Start/Stop better start back up!

You can control stop/start kicking in by how hard you press the brake pedal. I only ever let it stop if I expect a long wait.

Actually I just crossed a rail road track and there was a stop sign right after it :s
Unfortunately the salesman at that dealership has language barrier. Maybe I'll try to talk to somebody else. I definitely plan to research this further / try a diff dealer and demo unit |

I test drove one at the Drive for Team USA event a week ago. It was a 35i and has 149 on the odo.
When I floored it, when it hit 5k RPM, the car felt like it was braking, letting go of the brake, braking, letting go, braking, etc. until I released the gas pedal. The car would not exceed 40mph, felt like the 335i's limp mode on steroids. Tried DS. Did the same thing. Needless to say, that car was one of the reasons I chose to get an X5 in the end. That and the terrible steering feel. |
