Does it need wiring?
Surely the wheel will come with the correct wires attached and you will just plug it into the slip ring?

Then you will just need to code the paddles.

When I did my 535d the E61 was not available with paddles apart from the M5, hence I bought an E46 M3 SMG slip ring, I then ran wires from the slip ring down to the gear shifter and put the wires directly in.

I would have thought they use one slip ring now for most cars, with the exception being maybe for things like heated steering wheel or vibrating. I'm not worried about paddles, but would like the new wheel, but I need to get one which is heated as it an option I would seriously miss if I didn't have it now.

No wiring inside the wheel. Some other wiring needed to make the paddles work. Similar to the wiring needed in the F30.

Guys I'm happy to report, that the steering wheel fits perfectly. It looks just like its come from the factory. The speedometer view isn't blocked at all. Actually the size is similar to the earlier sport wheel, but the thickness has increased and it does feel a lot more sporty. I think the seller may have sent me an F15 wheel, not sure if the F30 wheel would be smaller.

BUTTTT, I've done the wiring changes, and VO coded the car but the paddles aren't working yet. So just trying to figure that out.

Was disappointed the paddles weren't working, and forgot to take pics LOL. But I'll take some now and upload them.

But I've paid for a one day access to the BMW web ISTA and am looking at all the wiring diagrams, etc. Looks like in the F25 no coding may be required to activate paddles. Just wiring to the EGS like in the older E series (on which the F25 is based anyway).

That would be my guess too, but you may need to change the slip ring too.

Nope slip ring stays the same. I've been doing a lot of research on this today, going through the online service stuff in detail.

Unlike the F01, F10 where the slip ring and SZL is an ECU itself, the slip ring/SZL in the F20/F30/F15/F25 only relays the signals onto further ECUs like the FEM, BDC_BODY. In the F25 the signal is relayed onto the JBF, BUTTT the JBF here doesn't do anything with the signal and just passes it on to the EGS directly.

That's why to activate paddles in the F01, F10 you need to code the SZL, and in the F20/F30 you need to code the FEM, and in the F15/F16 you need to code the BDC_BODY.

So while my wiring is done till the JBBF, I've now realized that it makes no difference since the signals just pass through the JBBF onto another connector and then onto the EGS.

So now tomorrow I shall get the rest of the wiring done, and hopefully have working paddles.

So heres a picture I took of the wheel. This in itself makes the car suddenly feel a whole lot more sporty. More pics once I get the paddles working.

Paddle Retrofit - DONE.

The paddles are working perfectly. And it required a bit more wiring than I thought. But it was all worth it, to have this beautiful steering wheel and now working paddles too. And with the Sport auto coded the shifts are lightning quick.

I personally Love the F25 Steering Wheel, except the Non Sport one.. Sport and M Sport are Beautiful IMO... But It would be interesting to see what it would look like on the X3... I think the F30 M Steering Wheel will fit since its basically in All BMW models except the 7 Series, X3/4, and Z4 (Am I forgetting something?)

Sure, I'll post more pics tomorrow.

All BMW airbags have standard connectors I think. The US has a different connector since they have 2 stage airbags, but Europe and the rest have the same connector.

I think my next mod down the line will be a 6wb instrument cluster. The current one I don't like at all.

I did the Steering Wheel retrofit on my X4 but it was allready equiped with the shift paddles.

Here is my tutorial : http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1220297

To add the shift paddles you will need some coding and cables.

Wiring diagram info

Hi there I am about to fit a paddle shift steering wheel to my f25 x3 30d, i have discovered that I have wiring from the steering wheel down to the first connector (is that what you call jbbf?) But I don't know what i need to do to get it over to the gearbox controller, is it going to the gear selector leaver, any help and pictures would be most appreciated.

Many thanks cheers Jules

Hello, any update on the subject? I will also try to fit an M steering wheel with paddles to my Lci. Will check the module first behind the glovebox first for pre-existing cables.

TIA,

Nikos
