For the other 99.99%, these things make safer situations. It's like saying, well we don't need a 3d brake light, they guy behind should be paying attention, we don't need running lights, you should be able to see the car, we don't need airbags, seatbelts are enough, we don't need mapquest, you can look at a map, we don't need navigation, isn't mapquest enough. Back in my day, we had to walk 8 mi to school , uphill each way, in the snow, with just newspapers on our feet.
Oh don't misunderstand - that's exactly what I'm saying.

Idrive, nav, etc. all make driving less safe and should never have been allowed in cars. You are piloting a missile down the road, keep your eyes up and pay attention. Respect the responsibility you've accepted by getting behind the wheel.

Until the car can completely drive itself, I think these systems are going to make it worse.

The only safety feature I'd appreciate that we don't have is blind spot detection.

You do have blind spot detection, it's called a sideview mirror.

Seriously? Mirrors don't cut it. The only real blind spot detection is turning your head, which can be a hazard.

Ah, so nobody ever showed you how to setup your mirrors correctly.

Properly adjusted mirrors will eliminate the "blind spot."

I had been adjusting my mirrors incorrectly since I started driving 20 years ago. I always set them so I could see the side of my car. Back in October when I took delivery of my X3 at the BMW performance center, one of the instructors told us how to adjust the mirrors similarly to the way described in the article linked above. It felt very strange at first but I adjusted to it quickly and it is amazing how much of a difference it makes by reducing the blind spot.

It's better to have blind spot detection unit for me as its so difficult for me to see the other lane traffic at night.

It's really criminal just how poor driver education is in this country.

I'd always used stick on curvy mirrors for that but didn't want to on my X3...I'll try pointing them outward more.

It sucks for us here, but the side view mirrors on Euro-spec X3s are actually more convex than those available in the states. There is a DIY aftermarket thread about how to order and install these better mirrors. We don't get them here because of regulations regarding distortion and depth perception, but for those of you who don't struggle with dimension, take a look at the thread. I'd post it here, but I'm on my phone.
