secondary noise in the back?

I have a 2013 X3 with the M Sport package. I like the handling and the ability to go between comfort and sport modes but there is this annoying noise that occurs mostly on rippled pavement. Obviously you hear the suspension when the car goes over the bumps but then there is a secondary noise, almost like a thud, coming from somewhere in the back which I haven't been able to put my finger on.

I had a very similar noise on my last car which was an MDX. It turned out that one of the struts was bad. The X3 recently went in for service and I asked the dealer to check the suspension. It came back a clean bill of health and of course the noise is still there.

I'm thinking its one of the many plastic (plastic on plastic or plastic on metal) pieces in the back or one of the seat backs. The interesting thing is I don't hear the noise when I have adults in the back seat.

Any thoughts?

I noticed if the PSI in the tires were low I would hear a thud when i went over a pot hole on the front left suspension but after inflating it to the recommended psi by the BMW technician, he said fill up the psi to the above 100+ mph recommendation on the side of the drivers door sill and it seams to have cleared it up. If i am not mistaken the psi should be 38 in the front and 44 in the rear for the x3 with m sport package

I also have an m sport x3 and have the same issue, they can't figure out the thud and it's been there 3 weeks. They did struts, a bulletin, and now we will see if new control arms and stabilizer bar works. 50k miles 2011.
