Sunroof not opening to first position?
Ok it's winter and I haven't opened my roof up until just a few days ago but I swear that it used to open to the first position first and then I had to press the button again to fully open it. Now... when it's closed and I hit the button to open it the roof opens all the way. when I close it the roof closes first to the 'comfort' position and then I have to push the button again to fully close it. I think my roof operation is broken when I open it. Or is there a setting that enables the roof to only open to the first position first? thanks.

If you had anything done with a software update, this is why it is doing that. After I had an update done for delayed throttle, my sunroof now works exactly as you describe it. After a lot of digging, my SA confirmed that after doing the software update, this is now how the sunroof operates. It's in the updated software. Why on earth they changed it is beyond me. It drives me nuts that it now opens all the way and then I have to hit the button again to bring it to the comfort position (when it used to stop at the comfort position). If you do a search, you will see the thread I started on this very topic. Others confirmed that theirs is now behaving the same way after the software update.

Press the sunroof button to the up position for 60 seconds. It should cycle the system and reset it.

Sunroof software bug
The same thing happened to me after a sunroof update in March 2013. I'm sure it's a software bug rather an intentional update, because it if they intentionally were removing the comfort position it would not require two presses to close.
My car was manually reprogrammed by Germany in order to revert operation to the way it used to be. |

Sorry, misread the OP. I thought the sunroof wouldn't return to the start position. Well if you ever have a sunroof that doesn't close properly, use my previous tip. Now I'm going to go out and check out my sunroof.

I just searched and found your original comments. Do you know (from the dealer) if there will be any fixes for this? Last edited by cadman50; 03-10-2014 at 03:12 PM.. Reason: adding comments |

Hope your roof doesn't ever break - I had the big sunroof in my X5 4.8iS, it snapped a drive cord somewhere deep in its bowels and BMW relieved me of £2000 to fix it! I've never had a sunroof in a BMW since.
Sorry to be negative ;-)

Cool. thanks. Next time they say I need a software update for something I'll have to think about it and wonder if it will screw up something else that I happen to like. Then again maybe it will fix something I don't like

I prefer the new process. Mostly I open the sunroof when starting a journey either the car is too hot or I'm driving at low speed so I want the roof fully open. When driving faster it's then a single click to partially close the roof. Works for me.

received a s/w update on my car today. Sunroof behavior is restored. Sunroof opens to comfort position. FYI. Not sure how to tell which rev of s/w we have?

Fantastic. I'm due for an oil change so I am going to ask them to update the software as well for this. Does it say on your work order the version of the software they installed?

it doesn't, unfortunately. It does say, something about the sunroof misbehaving prior to the s/w update for my radio problems then correcting itself after the s/w update. Maybe there should be a serendipity coding on the work order?

Any chance you would be willing to ask you SA what software update they did? I just called to book mine in for the oil change and for the updated fix for the sunroof and the first thing my SA asked was "do you know what specific update they did"? He didn't know any off the top of his head but said he would look into it before I brought it in. The more info I can give him the better. |

I don't have more details, as they are not outlined on my form. I'll see if I can find out. Hope the aforementioned helps a little. They also reprogrammed the control unit that monitors brake wear. It allegedly fixes the countdown timer being stuck at 3100 miles. Last edited by walendvay; 06-06-2014 at 03:53 PM.. |
