Went for coding here.
Started with wanting Video In Motion, but this led to other things like activating Internet, BMW Live and Torque & Power meters. Useless stuff, but knowing that BMW were hiding it from me didn't go down well

X3 is my wife's car and she had few complains: a.s.s. and since she has comfort access doors weren't unlocking after vehicle stopped. Coding fixed these two issues and added couple other benefits.

On the fence for coding that is why I am just taking my time to get the parts and software, the cheaper way.

That's correct. I'll grab a few pics later. To be honest, I'm not sure how accurate the things are so I rarely use them.

EDIT: Video will work better.

First you got to make up your mind if you really want to get your car coded and why. If you decide to go for it, then you have a choice if you want to do it by yourself or ask some one else to do it for you.

Doing it by yourself could be a challenge and also a great fun but you should be confident of doing it. Read the step by step instructions first and judge if you understand each and every step clearly and you are capable and willing to do them. This will let you know if you need external help.

I remember seeing some settings to change the units. Forget where it is, off the top of my head.

Definitely coding thanks to April1!

Built my own cable and have eliminated iDrive legal, have doors unlocking with first pull, and tire temp and pressures (cool!).

Need to work on getting mirrors to fold and unfold. Coded them but not working and haven't had a chance to go back and try again.

Went with coding. Why? Partially to get rid of some annoying things (I-Drive disclaimer, seat belt chimes) and partially to activate some available features (doors unlock when turn engine off, auto stop/start stays off permanently, close rear hatch via key fob, digital MPH readout in dash, etc.).

IMO, coding made a great car even better.

I would imagine if you screw something up, then BMW would be well within their rights to charge you to correct anything that broke if they can establish you have changed it.

You are technically right but:
1. It's not that easy to screw settings if one is systamatic cause most of the settings can be reverted back.

2. It will be difficult for dealer to establish that you have created the issue and it was not a system glitch or if changes were made by other service center.

This is an interesting one. Are you totally sure that the car computer(s) don't log any connection/programming session/parameter change? I wouldn't be surprised to discover it. For example it's tricky to install plugin modules and avoiding diagnostic to discover them, even if removed when dealing the car to service. Do you have precise information that programming doesn't leave traces?

P.S. Thank you again, your information were precious!
