Right Front Grille

A few weeks ago when parked on a crest I thought I had sustained some road damage with a hole in the lower right front grille (when viewed from front). When I checked I realized the hole was a design feature with a probe behind it.

Anyone know from the image below what the function of this is?

I looked on some members pictures and at quick review all engines appear to have this.
