Post BMW Revises Recommended Oil Change Intervals to 10,000 Miles for 2014+ X3

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW Revises Recommended Oil Change Intervals to 10,000 Miles for 2014+ Models
23
COMMENTS

BMW has changed its long time recommended oil change mileage intervals for all 2014 models and beyond. The changes apply to all vehicles produced from July 2013 on.

Previously, BMW recommended a 15,000 mile / 24 month Condition Based Service interval, but as of July 2013, the new basic interval will be every 10,000 miles / 12 months. This applies to both gasoline and diesel models.

The Z4 roadster, M5/M6 and ActiveHybrids have some special recommendations, which you can see in the announcement and charts below.

I wonder why? They have changed parts in engine to ones that wears more quickly?

If it would be a problem with current engines, they would revise it for the old models as well?

I certainly hope they revise the oil change interval on 2013 models, considering that the engines are unchanged for 2014.

They better allow the older models under warranty to be changed at 10k. Alot of BMW owners will be upset if they don't. Which includes me.

Well, here's what I heard from my dealer today, after asking him if 2013 cars will be serviced by the new 10,000 mi recommendation:

"My understanding is they will not. The service history will show the interval and the newer cars are marked as 10k oil change only because BMW is thinking owners aren't getting back into the dealerships often enough and are running around with unaswered questions affecting their satisfaction when surveyed. The change does not seem to be for mechanical reasons but more for customer satisfaction issues. I'd be happy to check with our service manager tomorrow to be sure."

If I hear anything more I'll post it.

subscribed.... i have a 2014, considering i picked it up in June, i wouldn't be eligible...i had planned on changing the oil every 7,500 miles b/c i feel 15,000 is just too long...IMO

I'm actually curious how that will impact the system telling me my car is ready for service actually if I change the oil early...

That kind of makes some sense....recently.bought 2014 and after a few weeks, have had 2 or 3 questions about whether vehicle is working right when it does this or that, and dealer that doesn't know answer just refuses to investigate with a call to BMW to get an answer......wants me to drop vehicle by and then make it into a shop service visit that they can bill BMW for their time spent contacting BMW. .

BMW's/dealer's lack of willingness to answer basic new owner questions was the only ding I made sure to get in on the customer satisfaction survey.

The system has no way of knowing you changed the oil early. It will still trigger the condition based service notice when it would have (assuming you didn't reset the service indicator when you changed oil.) I am also doing one oil change myself in between the dealer changes.

subscribed.

My 2013 has been in for a couple of minor issues and only one oil change in 15 months.

I'm sure if we were paying for oil changes BMW would recommend 5K oil change intervals.

For all you folks changing out the oil as a DIY job, what grade do you use and do you also change the oil filter and sump plug washer?

I use Mobil 1 5W30, but in the future I'll probably switch to Castrol synthetic since that's what BMW recommends. I use Mann filters, which I believe are original equipment. They come with 2 new "O" rings and a new sump plug washer. Rock Auto online has a great price on Mann filters.

In Canada, policy has always been stated intervals or one year, whichever came first. This has been the case since my e90 back in 2006.

You sure about that? It was explained to me by my local BMW service department the system will prompt me when it's ready... sometimes its beyond or shy of the 15K mileage we have in mind... Not sure how else it would vary unless it's somehow looking at the quality of the oil (if that is even possible)... If it was a hard set value of 15K, then it would prompt everytime at that mileage interval.

It bases it on the length of trips taken, starts, stops, short trips etc.

My dealer, Global Imports of Atlanta, invited me to a maintenance and care class one evening and told everyone to make sure we brought our cars in at least once every 12 months to do the oil change. It's in the manual. They gladly set up my first appointment for our '11 E90 and I verified they didn't reset the maintenance interval in the computer.

Here in the US, I had the oil changed annually on my E90 by my dealer and covered under maintenance. My dealership told me to use the same schedule for the F25, but I did notice that the service interval on the computer is every two years. I think it was on my E90 as well, though, IIRC.

Get a kit from the BMW dealer...

I buy a "kit" from my dealer. BMW oil, BMW filter (with O-rings and metal drain washer). I have record with the dealer of what oil & filter I purchased so they have no reason to say I used the wrong components. For me, the price difference between non-BMW parts and BMW parts is not worth the extra peace of mind of just going BMW. Especially for an oil change every 7500 mi.

If I buy the BMW oil and filter, I found getting it from my local dealer is cheaper than online.
