Tyre options NRFT
Hi all,
Currently wondering what to do with my RFT Pirelli P Zero tyres. Wanting to switch to non RFT. Which are to be recommended? Any personal experiences changing to non RFT's? Been hearing good things about the Michelin Super Sports. I have dynamic damping and 19" rims. Currently Pirelli P Zero front and rear: 245/45R19 and 275/40R19 Thanks all |

A forum member recently changed to Pirelli Rosso non run flat * rated tyres here in the UK, and is pleased with them. No issues with warranty as they are * rated.

You will find this is a topic that has been discussed many many times now. In my case I swapped out the OEM runflats (which were crappy Goodyear Excellence) for conventional non-runflat tyres 5 years and 100,000km ago on the same day I took delivery. Initially used Pirelli Scorpion Zero, which while great performance (ie grip) wise wore out far to quickly (about 20,000km I recall). Now on my second set of Pirelli Verde All Seasons. Very quiet, good milage with ~60,000 km on some rather rough roads out of first set.
The issue about the lack of BMW * rated is a non-issue certainly here in Australia. It does not effect warranty or effect your car insurance. As long as your replacement tyres are the same size, match or better the load rating and have a high enough speed rating you don't have a problem. On speed rating, here in Australia you are not required to have replacement tyres with speed ratings that match the OEM tyres. As long as they are rated above S (180km/h) they can be used. You might want to check what your local laws are on tyre speed rating. As backup to the conventional tyres, we have a full size spare permanently tied down in the back. Takes up some luggage space but still leaves enough room for the two of us on our trips away. As I said previously, the reduction in available luggage space might not suit everyone. Don't you guys find non-RFT's "floaty" over bumps in corners? I find I need to run my RFT tires at the average of the under-160mph and over-160mph inflation pressures shown in the Owners Manual to eliminate most of the float in my X3.

When I first changed over, I thought there was a difference. Especially since for about 3 days I had 1 non run flat and 3 run flats (until the remaining 3 were delivered). Now, I don't really notice a difference.

Can't answer definitively since I changed out the runflats for non-runflats the day I picked up the car 5 years ago. However since that time I've had short drives of friends & colleagues X3s, plus on one occasion an X3 loaner (all with runflats) and within my driving limits I really couldn't tell any difference in regard to handling compared with my conventional tyres. There may have been a little less body roll compared with my car but then I've got 17" wheels and correspondingly higher profile tyres (the other X3s had 18" and 19" wheels).
I run my non-runflat tyres at 36 psi. Tony |
