The M40i is definitely, without a doubt, the sportiest of both and better sounding.

The M40i was just so much fun...! Ugh... Decisions!

I'm giving myself a few weeks to think about it and negotiating with both camps to see which can give me a better deal.
I test-drove a C450 AMG (3 different ones at 3 different dealers) interior wise amazing yes! But when I stepped into the GLA 45 AMG and the 340, they just felt sportier and more fun.
I did not feel 364hp/384tq at all !
I did feel the 355hp/332tq in the GLA 45 and the 320hp purely in the 340 =D

I ordered the X4 M40i for this reason because, I would had ordered the 16' GLA 45 AMG which comes with 375hp/355tq but dealers are not negotiating. So I decided to see if the M40i was a chance and it was hard to find someone but I did.

Either way, keep us posted and share pictures and your experience.

I'm going to the dealer again Saturday, so I'll go take some shots then. Taking pictures didn't really come to mind when I test drove it.

If you can get record just a little bit of video from inside and outside the car when accelerating (not revving) that'd be great.

All 3 would be nice... especially Comfrt rev to 2.5rpm or 3.5rpm and 4.5rpm and Sport+ rev

The M40i in comfort mode, you don't feel shifts at all. I mean it is really smooth. In Sport and Sport+ mode, it shifts really quickly and when you go in manual mode, it will actually let you bounce off the redline. I have to say, it is better than the GLE for sure. I also noticed that it regularly picks the right gear and leaving it in Sport-Automatic mode is still a very fun experience. As soon as you floor it, it downshifts 1 or 2 gears for instant power (and instant fun).
Disappointed in the Sport shift in my wifes x4 28i. Thought it was slow and jerky. Thats in comparison to her e70 x5 with the 6 speed - which imo was a better shift.

My other point of reference is my daily driver - M235i which has the best 8 speed slush box I've driven. Hoping they have the software improved for the x4 40i vs whats mated with the N20.

Yep X4 28 which is 30lbs heavier than X3 28i is slower and nothing exciting after 60mph on a stock 28.
But trust me when I tell you, slap any stage1 tune (Plug'N'Play) simple 5 minute install and it will add 30-50whp/wtq gains without any bolt-ons.
It will be extra power available for when you want it, it will drive and feel stock except when you stomp it on any mode you will feel the extra goodies.
This is what I have been using since 3months after owning my X3.

To be clear I am talking about the smoothness and speed of the shift in sport mode, not the torque or hp. I had the N20 for 3 years in a 2013 X3 and I don't recall that transmission being this unrefined.

Again, maybe its my point of reference now, which is the 2'er.

Photos as promised, this is the M40i I test drove:

View post on imgur.com

Ended up going today to take pictures, unfortunately dealership is closed on Sunday so no sound clips. Also, it is parked exactly where I left it a week ago, probably because it's too cold/slippery to drive around with the PSS. This means I'm very lucky to have test driven it

Anyway, as for my purchase, might go for it if I can get a good finance rate, not looking to lease it. I'm still looking at the GLE 450 AMG and their offer is quite good. Guess I'll know this week...

Thanks for the pics.
Did your dealer ever tell you what the financing rate from bmw Canada is for this model?
Their website still shows 0%... My dealer said that he'd let me know once he got the rates, but has yet to send me a message about them.

Thanks,
GG

Rate is 4.99 for 48-60 months, it's been known since about 2 weeks, not sure why he hasn't told you. You can probably try for 3.9 but since you already put your order down, might be hard to negotiate since he sees you as already "committed" if you know what I mean.

I told my salesman I'm not paying 4.99% if Mercedes is offering 1.9% on their AMG Sport line and Audi is offering 3.9% on their regular but willing to match Mercedes. So we will see...

EDIT: Dealers and salesman have very little leeway in interest rates from BMW Finance. Also, from what I am told they don't make much if any profit on finance vs the sales price since BMW Finance is the one backing you for the loan, therefore making the money over the interests (not the dealership). An option you can do, is find another financial institution to cover the loan, such as TD or CIBC for example. You might get a much lower rate that way. BTW, this is for Canadians, not sure how it applies/works for anyone else.

Well if I finance with BMW I will get 0.75% off the interest rate for being a return customer. I don't think they can do anything about the rates set by bmw Canada. Has anyone here managed to get them to lower the rate?

With that said, if they don't do better than 4.24% I will not finance through them.

Just to show you there is an outer world and no - I can't talk myself into raising the money for a M40i. My MY-14 35i has 15000 km on the clock.

I specified my vehicle -put down a cash advance - and dealar had it for 2 month as a DEMO - got 15% off. I kept my MY-97 9000 Turbo as a "go down to the village" vehicle.

Half of the downpayment came from additional loan on house at a rate of 1.37% - no payback scheme. Half of the money was out of pocket.

In reply to myself, I found some Carbon Fiber trims, although a bit on the expensive side, but they look nice:

Looks like the install is pretty easy too.
