My wife and I are both due new phones in a couple of weeks and I have decided to go for iPhone 4s so that they are compatible with the cradle we have already bought. I think you'll be waiting until 2012 at the earliest for an iPhone 5 cradle.
I think what I might just do is keep my 3GS until the new iphone cradle is out (Since I am not buying my X3 until September), buy a 3GS cradle in the meantime, then the new one when it comes out and sell the old cradle.

how much do these cradles cost?

Not sure exactly as I got mine for free but from memory they are £70GBP for basic and £130GBP for media, which is $110US and $210US - but you'll probably pay less than us. Media gives you ability to use iPod functionality on iDrive when phone is in the cradle, although some people have had issues getting this working

Wait, so now I am really confused as I think a lot of people are with the BMW pricing struction on their options.

In the US you have to pay $150 for smartphone integration option, so what does that do if you still need to pay $100-$200 more for a cradle that they don't even show on their options list? basically you pay them $150 for this option then when you get your car they tell you that you need to buy something else for it to work, And then another $250 for the BMW apps, wow, so BMW is making more than Apple here with far less cost.

The $250 BMW Apps option includes the Smartphone Integration (6NF), so no additional $150 charge there. The cradle is also not required for some of the BMW apps initial functionality.

As far as BMW making more than Apple, not so sure in the end.

ah, thanks for clearing that up, I thought that they just meant you had to get smartphone integration if you clicked on BMW apps, so its really just $100 extra ("just" LOL) for the apps thing. So what can you do with smartphone integration if you don't have the cradle?

See the big issue for me is that I have an iphone 3GS and probably new one this summer, but my wife doesn't, she has a BB for work and a generic regular phone for personal use and doesn't want an iphone (would't use it like I do). She drives the SUV most of the time. So do I really want to spend all this cash to hook my phone up to the car 1-2 days a week? If I can get by with only spending $150 and have it play music from my phone I guess thats all I need. If I ever switch back to BMW for a sports car I will get the works for my phone (thinking next gen M3 or M5 when I trade in my C63, not that I don't like that car, its awesome, but I am still a BMW fanboy, just couldn't pass up $10K savings over a M3 that Merc was offering me at the time)

You can still play music from your iPhone 3G by just connecting it via its USB. Calls can be made via bluetooth fine with no cradle

Thanks, this will help me save some cash when I order my car as I am sure the dealer would tell me I need it all for my phone to work at all...

He'll probably tell you that you need a moonroof and xenons for your iPhone to be able to play music

well he won't be upset with my order as I will be getting almost everything but the kitchen sink ($55K US with M Sport kit is what my car is at right now)

Wow, the phone list for bluetooth on bmwusa.com doesn't have any BB listed for Sprint, thats not going to make my wife happy, her work only uses sprint as their carrier, and her personal phone is also spring, so they won't work with BMW bluetooth, WTF. This could be a deal breaker

okay looking at the description on bmwusa.com it says that the smartphone integration allows access to stored music, can improve signal reception and charges the battery.

So does the USB plugin not charge the phone's battery? also is the music displayed differently with this option vs just USB, like access to libraries or anything like that? I understand the reception part as it connects your phone to the cars antenna...

When I connected Apple's USB cable the phone did charge. I don't remember if the BMW cable did the same but I think so as well.

As far as hands free goes with bluetooth just about any phone should work, BMW just hasn't tested them all. If it works with a headset odds are it will work with the car.

That is an interesting point. It depends on the type of snap-in adaptor and there is some confusion and mixed feedback from people on whether it works at all. USB without snap-in seems to always work and you get album artwork. Snap-in media should give you the same.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. My main concern with the iPhone 4 is the fact that due to the phone's antenna problem, I understand you need to keep a case on it. I assume the snap in adapter wont work with a case (maybe I'm wrong), so one will have to remove the case every time the phone goes into the adapter. Not the end of the world by any means, but not ideal.

Do you get a lot of dropped calls without the case? I was very worried about it and got the free bumper case, but in practice I found out I never need to use it and have not had a call drop since I bought it.

I actually don't have an iPhone yet (I currently have a Blackberry). I'm due for a new phone, and plan on getting one to take advantage of it's capabilities with the X3, since I ordered the 6NF, 6NR, etc.

I have work colleagues and friends who have iPhone 4s with no case and no problems at all with signal. Not sure if it was fixed in later production or if it only effects a small number of people based on how they hold the phone.

I'm buying one and won't have a case on it when I use it (they make the phones look rubbish IMO and anything that is stuck to the screen only degrades its performance). I just use a leather case for protection when it's in bags/pockets. I don't have any concerns about the signal problem

Incidentally, this article suggest the shape of the iPhone 5 will change....

If you want a snap-in adapter, be resigned to buy last year's phones: the production lag for the adapters is at least six months. On the other hand, I'm guessing that iPhone 5 will be immediately compatible through Apple's USB cable. You will lose the antenna boost, but again in practice for me I keep my iPhone with me all the time and have had no problems at all with calls, messages and music.

Has anyone noticed if the antenna boost actually works? I would be surprised, since an antenna is typically tuned to given frequencies - we have 850, 1900 and others in the US, on the other side of the pond more, and I have no clue what you guys have in Australia

Apparently you need to use the cradle to get the iPod out function of BMW apps or I wouldn't even mess with it, USB cable is so much easier!
