Air dial

hopefully this is a one answer post - but can anyone tell me what the two ventilation dials are for - one above the radio and one for the back seat passengers that has a red and blue mark on it? I mean I set the temp to what I want on the ultra-high-tech dual climate zone digital system, then there is this old fashioned dial that looks like you are supposed to turn it to the red for heat and blue for cold - no matter what it does I think it takes away from the super modern look of the car (as my boss said when I gave her a ride the other day "oh do you move that dial for heat and air conditioning?" - was kind of embarrassing since I didn't know the answer - or maybe that's what it's really for!! - please tell me there's a better answer than that)

The one on the center of the dash, and presumably the one in back let you modify the set temp for the "face level" vents when in the heat mode. turning the dial from red to blue seems to mix in more outside (unheated) air. I guess it's for people who prefer cooler air at face level than the system's regulated temperature at all the other vents. Haven't tried it with the AC on yet.

Does the same with AC on -- blows relatively cooler or warmer air out of those mid-level vents depending on how you have it set.
