Have the dealer or a good indy check the Transfer Case fluid. If they find metal shavings then it will need to be replaced. The cost will be $3000+ for the dealer to replace it.

First try simply flushing the transfer case. We had similar-sounding symptoms on our F25 a couple of years ago on two occasions. A flush of the transfer case (at that time carried out under warranty) solved the problems.

Same thing happened to me, I thought I already posted this on someone elses thread, but that might have been on the "other" X3 forum. There's a SIB out there for a transmission reprogram for the 2011s which your dealer should be able to find. Basically, the tranny gets confused and shifts between 2-1-2, or 2-3-2 and causes that jerkyness at low speed. I believe the SIB even specifically says something about when the wheels are turned.
Happened to my car and was HORRIBLE. Got the transmission re-programmed at the dealer and it was fine for 65k miles (I sold the X last month). Good luck! |

lol, was it a deep sea blue?
I just picked up a higher milage that has an awful hesitation at low speeds. I fear the worst. I will see if an update will help. |

Seriously, try the transmission reprogram. Ask the dealer to research the SIBs on it. I remember the other thing that would happen is when I'd come near a stop, slowing down but not stopping all the way, then try to accelerate the car would lurch forward or not go at all. This is also when the dealer (and SIB) said it was going from 2nd to 1st to 2nd all within a second or two. I could tell the reprogramming worked by driving the 5 miles home from the dealer. |

50 bucks for the fluid from BMW and I paid an indy about 60 to do mine. The hard part is that the exhaust is in the way of the drain hole and I dont have all the tools in the world to get to that point. Apparently you can do it with a box wrench and large hex bolt or something, but I was ok paying someone to do it.
My last X3 (2006) I didnt even have to raise the car, just crawled under and drained and filled. |
