Oil everywhere and some disconnected hose
New to me '14 iDrive30 M and the engine bay is covered in oil. . Picked up the car knowing it was used (100,000 miles) and had some oil leaks. Just changed out my charge pipe and noticed this thing is saturated in oil. Yes, the valve cover, oil filter housing, and oil pan all leak (slightly), however the firewall, engine block, fender, etc all have a heavy dirt and oil film on them. Basically underhood is just coated with a dirty film of engine oil (heavier on drivers side). The charge pipe was coated on the inside too, heavily. I wouldn't be surprised to find standing oil in the intercooler. . OK, onto the real question, the hose in the first picture is under the charge pipe and comes out of the crankcase and just ends (which you can see in the picture). What is this and should it be open to the elements like this? I'm 99.8% certain the answer is no, but the hose looks fine and I could not see anywhere it should be connected. Any help on this hose and the oil issue itself would be greatly appreciated |

I’m not sure about the hose, but having owned several BMW’s over the past 15 years I can tell you that common gaskets that leak are:
- valve cover - oil filter housing - oil pan. Your car likely has all original gaskets in these locations so not surprising you have oil almost everywhere. Not too difficult to DIY OFH and VC gaskets, the oil pan is a LOT of work, major job. |
