High mileage 28d

I am interested to hear about the significant maintenance experience from North American owners of high mileage 28d engines.

'16 X3 28d w/53K mi, only repair was fuel pump under warranty. 35-40 mp/USg in town, 34-40 highway depending on ambient temps and need for speed.

I'll let you know when it breaks 100K mi.

Pushing past 59K miles currently. New fuel filter just went in, oil change done recently and all new air filters. Runs like a champ.

Thank you for the responses. The reason for my inquiry is I love the vehicle, the engine transmissiom match and intend to hang onto it for a while. I have 58,000 miles and had DPF filter replaced underwarranty at about 45,000 miles. Kept getting check engine light. Fuel economy seemed to increase and slightly throatier exhaust note under power like climbing a hill. I get similar fuel economy. Entirely diffrernt vehicle after run flats removed.

Do you folks use the stop/start function? After DPF replacement the mechanic told me to be sure to give it a good run after encountering long idling like in a construction delay. Mine is driven in a semi rural area typically 45 to 60 mph with occassional traffic lights. Since receiving the advice I tend to use the stop/go function when in city traffic. Any comment on this practice?

Unfornately, my ownership of the 28d has been very similar to yours. I have had the check engine light come on on 5 seperate occasions, all during the warranty period. I have about 50k miles and haven't seen the DPF light yet. I do occasional 100km drive about every other week which helps with the DPF regen I think. I've turned off the start/stop function since I took delivery and never used it since.

I would turn off the AutoStart as well. Doesn't help a whole lot in a diesel and it's quite annoying in my opinion. An app such as Bimmercode (and Bimmerlink) would be invaluable for long-term ownership and diagnostics.

The CEL can be for many things, oftentimes for the AdBlue/SCR system errors. For example, the SCR heater line seems to fail quite commonly. This will trigger a CEL. Without scanning it, you don't know why it's on. At the very least I would get Bimmerlink with an appropriate OBD scanner (Veepeak works for me) and be able to diagnose things myself.

Mine is a '16 28d with 53K mile. So far, the only problems have been a defective DEF tank line heater and one warped front disk rotor. Both were replaced under warranty. I drive mine periodically on 200-mile round trips to Cleveland at 70 to 80 mph, so no problem thus far with excessive soot or plugged EGR cooler. Additionally, I always use the stop/start feature without issue. My only concern is finding something to replace it in future since BMW has given up on diesels.

Again, thanks for responses.

My interest in using the Stop/Start function in city traffice stems from the fact I believe diesel exhaust is very cool at idle. It is my understanding the higher the EGT the better it is for the DPF. Then again, it may be counter productive as the engine exhaist will be cooler on start up. Hmm?

The best thing for the DPF is to get the car out on the open road from time to time and let it stretch its legs. That should burn off most accumulated sooty deposits in the DPF. Alternatively, you can use a scan tool to manually request a regen whenever desired. The engine has to stay above 2k rpms and speed above 60mph during this time, but you can trigger it at will.

Using start/stop might be OK on a gasser that you can't really feel when it's running. Even then, it places unnecessary stress on starter components, fuel pump and injectors and runs the batteries down more. I see no point for the feature on modern diesels, but to each his own.
