What to do with ugly gear lever?

Hey,

I have a recently acquired X3 2012 and it has a badly scratched up gear shifter, is there any way to replace this specific part or make it look better without replacing the whole unit?

How does one even do that?

What you can do to fix it, disassemble it so its only the clear part. Sand it all down not too much before you touch the lettering, Use a clear coat or clear resin to re-clear it.

How does someone even cause that kind of damage? Looks like it was hit with a hammer, several times

Beats me! You would think that the rest of the interior and particularly buttons and the steering wheel would be in equally bad shape but they're surprisingly enough in good condition.

Got it today! Was a bit disappointed at first because it had an M logo which I didn’t notice in the product photos. Oh well, I went ahead and replaced it anyway.
It wasn’t too difficult to pry the old one off but use your own tools and not the garbage that is sent with the sticker.
Quite pleased overall despite the M logo, only real bummer is that said M logo isn’t fully illuminated.
