Just do tint. 5-20%in the rear. Much cleaner look and get ceramic tint which blocks out the heat. I have 20% in rear and helps so much. I hardly use the cargo cover as it's hard to see in the trunk now.

30% to the front and overlayed 50% (maybe 40%?) on top of the rear privacy tint to match. I was after UV and heat protection.
on later model X3s they now come with built in roller screens which I would get next time around. |

I have the roller screen on my back windows. Save yourself the $$ and just get 20% or darker ceramic tint done for the back and trunk area. I never use the shade rollers after I got the tint.

Thanks for the input.
The shades are to keep the sun out of my 18mth old daughter's face when she's in the her baby seat (rear facing). I think the the window shade would do a better job then tint? Also, the cops up here are terrible for illegal tint on cars (upstate NY). |

The best option I've found is the "cling" style window tint film. Get the heaviest they make: 5% "limo tint" is what I got. Cut several pieces in the sizes you want. Then move them around, put them on, take them off as you need them. The only disadvantage is on the side windows: you'll have to remove them if you want to roll the windows down.
Most auto parts stores carry them. Or online. |

BMW offers aftermarket screens for the X3: Sun blinds rear & luggage have the BMW part #51462164770. They fit well and can be easily removed if not needed. We paid around $200.-

If I am remembering correctly, the new NY tint regulations are only for the driver and front passenger windows, so you should be OK to tint the rear sides. Ask you local tint guy.

not sure about other x3 but mine came with that dynamic tint from the factory that will dim the windows to about 15 percent or more. I have to go through a security gate for work and every time is sunny the guards will ask me to lower the rear window because they are not able to see inside. I added the shades for my little girl when she is asleep and will not move her face. It adds a layer of sun protection.
