Unusual sound from 2011 x28i?

Sitting in drive thru line with window done, I heard this sound.....

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WUg...Vx_wcPvjg3gA8C

Does anyone here know what this may be? Thank you!

Not experienced enough on this platform to know, but I would get it on a lift with the car on and try to pinpoint it. Can be something loose in the exhaust system...does the noise change when you shift from p, r, d? Does it get louder on acceleration, etc... best bet get it on a lift.

Hopefully it’s just something loose

Noise isn’t there all the time...only sometimes. It does not increase with speed or gear selection

That really does sound like something loose - not internal to the engine or transmission. You can't tell what area it's coming from on a video, but an exhaust brackets seems like a good starting point. Or could be some other loose bolt, or even a cat or muffler falling apart internally.

Not 100% since I've only experienced that sound while listening from driver's seat, but I think that's the transmission and completely normal. On later year X3s there are small clips or plugs that help to isolate and reduce this sound... but on our early years these plugs are missing. They can be ordered and should be fairly easy to install. I have always meant to get them but always forget and after 5 years I don't see the point anymore in putting in the time or effort. should be parts 7 and 8
