Tailgate Rattle

I have noticed an increase in rattles and noises as I drive around.

Sounds like it's coming from the rear. Like I have a bag of pipes and each bump i go over. a metal clunking noise comes from the rear

Anyone got anything similar, or is this just normal for such a car?

Tailgate rattle

Check the black rubber adjustable bumpers on the trunk. One on each side. Try adjusting them, helped fix mine.

Unscrew them a little. Tailgate should equally rest on them.

You can turn them by hand, no tools needed. Keep adjusting till rattle stops.

My dealer did adjustments three times so far, and it keeps coming back. And actually I'm not sure it has to do with these spacers. I think that sound is a result of some lateral movement of the hatch when the car body flexes, and that can't be mended by adjusting the spacers.

I found the similar sound come from the storage compartment, when you open it, can see the big plastic storage in which 2 top sides hit the alumimum bars! Try try!

I find only one of the plastic bumpers rotates. The other seems to be fixed or is it stuck?

Clive I thought the same, but a little more force and the one that seemed stuck came loose. Turning it counterclockwise, I believe.

I'm still battling this issue (or one very similar), but adjusting them has helped a little. Still get some noise, but not as much. Will keep trying, as dealer just wants to ride along/doesn't hear anything (naturally). I'm going to have better luck doing it myself, I'm sure.

Still working on it. Once I'm confident I have actually fixed I'll try to post pictures. The metallic rattle is getting much better, but I still get a creak every now and then on flex

Hi all
I had a similar issue with my car. It turned out to be the extensible cover in the boot (trunk).
Take a look at the following thread
http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=687509

This may not be the same problem you are having but I hope it helps

Cheers

Sorry to bring back an old thread but I've had the dealer tried to fix this 3 times now and each time it comes back within a matter of weeks. So tired of this issue. Just wondering if anyone has had a fix completed and not have the issue come back since?

On another note, does the tailgate make a really loud noise when you open it electronically from the inside? I feel like it's the sound of someone slamming the door shut really loudly. Not sure if this is normal or not.

BMW Toronto (downtown) fixed the tailgate issue for us. They just reseated it in the manner as others described. Hasn't come back.

The tailgate does make a noise. Sounds more like a tupperware popping than a slammed door though

I had rattling emanating fom the rear cargo area as well. I opened the rear hatch and adjusted the rear seats; I essentially pulled the seats into their track...

My issue was a loose rear seatback, not fully retracted in the locked/upright position.

Let's hope that is your fix as well.

Like the OP and others, I think an SUV will eventually lend itself to some creaks/rattles, due to the rear cargo cover and moveable rear seats. I believe it's the nature of the car...

GL/Cheers,

BB

Are you sure it is the tailgate that is rattling? The reason I ask is that some of us on this forum experienced a similar problem which we traced to the cover in the boot (trunk) area. I'm talking about the one that attaches horizontally across the back seats that you pull out with a handle so that it disguises the contents of the boot.
I don't know how to attach a link to the thread (sorry - I couldn't figure it out) but if you search for "Bloody rattling cargo / trunk / boot cover" you will see some more information.

I'm not saying this is the same problem you are having but it is worth checking out as it is easy to fix if it is.

Good luck

Cheers
