2012 X3 3.0d with twin turbo?
Hi folks, first post - been lurking a long time here!
We are about to buy a 2012 x3 3.0d - our first SUV after our previous 120d passed away (accident). To my surprise the engine was markt "twin turbo" when I popped the hood.. I was under the impression that only 3.5d had twin turbo and that 3.0d was single turbo? The dealer is unfortunately not very knowledgable in this area.. He claims the car is a 3.0d with 258 HP.. As we live in Europe he mentioned that the car was built in the US (same factory as the X5). Still, I have searched and been unable to find any reference to a 3.0d twin turbo, all points towards the 3.5d.. Any pointers? regards |

Put very simply:
A single turbo charged (twin scroll) 3 litre diesel engine is fitted to the 30d and produces 258bhp. A twin turbo charged 3 litre diesel engine is fitted to the 35d and produces as far as I remember 312bhp. They are both very rapid vehicles and neither will ever disappoint. BMW continue to confuse the public with their car numbering system. In the US (and some other countries), the 4 cylinder turbocharged 2.0 litre gasoline engine is named the 2.8i. Also the later X5 has a 3.0 litre twin turbo charged diesel engine called the 40d. Last edited by Peter_R; 02-20-2016 at 06:05 AM.. |

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...y/engines.html BMW TwinPower Turbo diesel engines. The consistent implementation of BMW EfficientDynamics ideas is again evident in the BMW TwinPower Turbo diesel engines. They are made in lightweight aluminium construction and use variable turbine geometry, which permits a more efficient use of exhaust heat energy. This results in the turbo engine performing like a much larger aspirated engine and achieving this special performance with lowered consumption. The common rail injection system guarantees optimum combustion. An important characteristic of this system is that the injection pressure can be created autonomously of the speed of the engine and the amount injected. Combined with a powerful control unit and injection nozzles, this markedly reduces consumption and emissions and increases running smoothness. A fully-variable performance control and the unique turbocharging technology round off the innovation package with less space and weight. In total, these diesel engines offer typical BMW torque with low consumption – a unique combination of efficiency and dynamics. Last edited by Peter_R; 02-20-2016 at 07:02 AM.. Even more confusing information:
What is a twin power turbo? The significant upgrade in power and efficiency is chiefly down to the use of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which combines High Precision Direct Fuel Injection, Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing along with twin-scroll turbocharging. What is a twin scroll turbo? In twin-scroll designs, the exhaust manifold physically separates the channels for cylinders that can interfere with each other, so that the pulsating exhaust gasses flow through separate spirals (scrolls). With common firing order 1-3-4-2, two scrolls of unequal length pair cylinders 1-4 and 3-2. |

Great, thanks for the explanation!
I also looked up the VIN-number and it clearly states that it is a 3.0d engine! It is _really_ comfortable to drive, I hope we gave the dealer an offer he can't refuse, he would get back to us on Monday... Crossing fingers! |

You won't be disappointed with the x30d , it's more than enough power for a mid sized 4x4 and leaves most things standing. The look of surprise is what I enjoy the most as they come to a stop (some seconds later)at the next set of lights ;-)

3.0 D is US?
I wish we could get the 30d in the US in the X3! I am very happy with the 20d, but would be happier with the 30d
