I saw the carbon black ext color and it looks blue if you look at it in a certain angle.

My inlaw's X6M is carbon black and it looks black most of the time, but does look dark blue in bright light. They have a jerez black M3 and it is the same way.

Our X3 is saphire black and I think like the carbon black a little better.

Anyone know if 20" wheels will be offered as a build add on vs accessory? Why would BMW show it at the shows w/o offering it as an option?

Unfortunately, the M Double Spoke 310 Light Alloy 20" wheels (shown on the Geneva Motor Show X3 M Sport in Deep Sea Blue) are an accessory. The good thing is the X3 Difference Event $500 certificate can be used toward the purchase of these rims. I recently ordered a fully loaded M Sport in Carbon Black with black Nevada leather and Fine Line Wave wood trim. My dealer gave $2,100 off the vehicle and 20% off the 310 wheels and Pirelli Pzero RFT Tire combo. Plus they agreed to swap out the 19” all-season or summer tires that come standard with the M Sport for the Pirelli Sottozero Serie II Winter RFT’s for no additional charge. Yes I plan to do a summer/winter swap. I did this with my 2005 X5 4.4i sport for 6 years and plan to do the same with the X3.

I’m on the fence on the color between the Carbon Black and Black Sapphire. I still have about a week window to change my mind. Anyone have any thoughts/preference? How about real world pics of the Carbon Black on an X3? I was sold on the Carbon Black until I saw alpineweiss’ Black Sapphire pics.

I say go with carbon black as it is a m sport package specific colour that cannot be ordered on just any x3 or just any bmw... plus it looks black most of the time anyways =P

Carbon Black looks fantastic. Saw it on a sparkling clean X5 on Friday.
It looked black until it was alongside me.

I go to Laurel BMW in Westmont. I followed my CA there after he left another BMW dealer. All my service has been at Laurel as well. Believe it or not, one of the service advisors at the dealer where I bought my 2005 X5 recommended that I go to Laurel for repairing problems that the old dealer couldn’t fix.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Today I visited my dealer to see if they still had a Carbon Black X5 M on the lot. They did and it was parked next to a black sapphire 3 Series. IMO the CB gave the X5 more character and depth. However; even though it was raining and overcast you could tell it wasn’t pure black especially compared to the black window moldings. I’ve included a couple of pics that I took. Sorry that they're not better but the X5 was parked in a bad location surrounded by other vehicles. Plus I was driving away when I realized I had my camera so I snapped a few while seated in my car.

Even if I did decide to change my color choice to black sapphire, I may not have the option as my X3 is slated to start production next week.

Re the wheels on the M Sport, indeed the SE too, I think the problem is the amount of air between the top of the tyre (sorry tire) and the bodywork. This distance is too great and no matter what size wheels you fit it will always look not quite right.

This is true but I think it's more pronounced with wheel arches that aren't black. It's an optical illusion

Yeah, Carbon Black has a blue hue to it for sure, but still not bad. Amazing that a dealer has a X5M sitting in inventory!

It's a 4x4 and offers reasonable ground clearance and good suspension travel. What do you expect?

Agree. On my commute yesterday there was an Acura MDX that was lowered and had 20" wheels on it. It looked ridiculous to me....

Also, I suspect those wheels are going to look much better in person. Photos tend to over dramatize that clearance because they are often shot from lower angles.

I agree in some respects...but of course when are 99% of these cars driven off road? Never? Sometimes in the UK they are call Chelsea tractors, ie they never get out of Chelsea (London).

The Q5, Q7, Cayanne & X5 don't have these slightly awkward proportions. I think BMW want the X1 to be the least attractive, X3 decent, and X5 best. Good positioning from one of the best marketing OEMs.

Can the X3 really use all the clearance under and into the wings, I doubt it, it's not a Land Rover Defender. I bet the suspension travel isn't that great.

BTW, I have one on order as it's the best option for me, but I still ask these questions.

If your brave enough, you can always try this on your X3

In your opinion how does x3 compare to your x5 4.4?

Just placed my order on Carbon Black X3 35i M-sport, sure about the colour because i have same colour on dad's X5 M-sport. SUV looks good in Carbon Black, you have it only in M-sport so it's quite unique..
