BMW Extended Warranty- Any good ?

My car is just about to go out of warranty and I have been contacted by BMW regarding an insurance based extended Warranty (Via Allianz insurance).
Does anybody have any experience of this product? They offer a comprehensive, named component and drivetrain cover. As always the devil is in the detail with all insurance products in terms of knowing what is not covered!
Just wondered if anybody has used this product and what the claims experience has been before I take a decision ?

I will also be in the same position as you in around 5 months time. It's the same with all extended warranties, do you or don't you?
Some people swear by them and others prefer to save ex-amount of money per month as a "just in case" precaution if something were to go wrong.

As you say though, it would be nice to hear from anyone who has taken out the warranty and actually used it.

I've had experience of both mechanical claims and accident recovery (from France).

I wouldn't use anyone else. When you're at the dealer they treat it as if it's a full BMW new car warranty.

Well worth the cost.

The only thing they don't cover is wear and tear, unless that has changed.

I know on the M3 I went to Warranty Direct, and they changed all the control arms etc. and the guys at BMW said that wouldn't have been covered by the BMW warranty. But that was a couple of years back.

I do think it is a very good warranty though.

We decided at end of May to go for the BMW full cover option.

Based on our other cars we would expect a bill for "something" between 40&60k miles and pretty sure that it will be more than £1000 so its a fair bet we think...

and very reassuring to have too

One thing to note is if you are getting close to the 60k mile point, the price almost doubles, however, if you pay monthly it just rolls on at the sub 60k mile rate.

Would you guys still buy the full cover warranty on a car that has done only 14000 miles? That will be something I need to decide in a few weeks!

Tricky one, is the car from a main dealer?

Has it got full BMW service history and all done on time?

It is obviously coming up to 3 years old, should have had a fair bit of service work done at 2 years, have you checked to make sure it has?
If it has then you may want to risk as BMW can be pretty OK when it comes to good will, and you could argue a three and half year old car with sub 20k miles on it should not have gone wrong.

Maybe consider the driveline warranty?

Agree with gizzE, this is a tricky decision. After using the extended warranty on previous BMW cars, (and getting value from the warranty), I opted to go with the extended warranty even with low mileage on my current car. I'm for the best peace of mind approach.

With all the technology in our current cars, particularly if we have some of the more complex options, it doesn't take much to recover some of the warranty costs, if we have a problem.

BMW goodwill can be quite generous, but I'm not so sure we can totally depend on that for all issues, even at low mileage.

I had an issue with my 535i, where the actual fault was difficult to find, required a few hours labour, which was covered by the warranty. Costs soon escalate when a problem is not obvious. I just had to pay the £100 excess I run with.

I may be slightly biased in my opinion, but after having a new V8 engine on an extended warranty, including hire cars for several weeks, etc., and not having to pay a penny, focused my mind on assessing the risks.

You do have options on the cover you take up. For the 535i I have opted for the fully comprehensive policy, plus emergency cover, with a £100 excess.
