Instrument Panel Went Blank/Dark
So, backed out of my garage and out of driveway as running late. Then I noticed dash was blank--or dark, no anything. iDrive was working fine. it was crazy. I thought at first I must have done something, but nope nothing. I have HUD so I could see speed and when I locked and parked the car and walked away, when I started it back up, it was normal. Tried searching but didn't find anything.
Car is 2021 X3 drive build week 33. Taking to dealer tomorrow anyway and luckily I took a picture. |

Posted a thread with this exact experience earlier. Kind of like it shut down and then rebooted. HUD and instrument cluster dark but iDrive fine and music keep playing... Unfortunately I did not get a picture as it reset pretty quickly but will monitor.

I have a 2020 M40i and have been dealing with this issue for a year and one month now. My experience is a bit different however, mine happens around once a month but not only does the live cockpit dash goes black but also iDrive screen as well.
Had software redone, software updates, all of it and BMW still has not fixed it. Nothing better than driving 80mph down the freeway and all the screens go out. Of course it never happens when the dealership has it, so I have been out of luck and just have to deal with it. Sorry to hear you are dealing with a similar issue. Let me know if you get yours resolved so I can tell my dealer. |

Doesn't matter what build date or week.
New cars have glitches. They're all computers. I was literally explaining that I also had this issue happen 1 time to me in 15k miles. Drove a whole journey with KOMBI completely blank. Never happened again. Just for reference, things like this may happen once in a blue moon. Just like a head unit reset. If it happened once, I would not sweat it. |

I've had similar issues on multiple cars over the last 5 years or so. We are driving computers (actually multiple computers) with wheels. The different computer modules communicate on a network called CANBUS. When there is a CANBUS communication failure, or a partial communication failure, this is manifested by seeing one or multiple screens or modules/features not working. In my Subaru I would intermittently lose a camera...usually the backup camera. Turning off the car and allowing it to fully powering down then restarting will basically reboot the entire system and like magic all was fine again. Sometimes it was no screen on the infotainment system but you get my point.
What is hard to determine is how long you have to wait for the entire system to power down. My understanding on our BMWs is that you can hold the volume control in for about 30 seconds and the system will reboot. Maybe that is just the iDrive and not the entire system. @freshxdough, any comment on how to restart the entire system short of disconnecting the battery?? |

There is advanced info about this at the dealer. Just released. Requires programming to 20-07 or later.

Early September, should be 20-07 from the factory. Has only happened to me once so assuming a one off computer glitch at this point...

No real complaints other than setting road warnings to show in HUD won’t be retained and the one incident of instrument panel going dark. Don’t think that will get an update from my dealer...

Flashed it onto my car over the last few days - I did everything but the head unit and Kombi in one session ( took about 30 mins via esys flashing one by one - prefer that way, as I check the battery every 10 mins to make sure it's not stopped too much), then charged the car over night. Next morning did MGU ( 22 mins ), kombi (12 mins) and the ATM ( 13 mins). Afterwards battery was at 82%. The car was on a 14V/ 10A supply during coding. I know it's lower than most suggest, but doing it split like I have done it was safe enough |

So did you get this fixed or figured out?
MY wife's 2021 X3 with all digital cluster and HD doing the same, screen going blank.
We have less than 500 miles on the car. Dealer replaced the battery so far. What's the word on your car @Little tomato? |

Yeah 7...
freshxdough - Our tech has ruled out the battery, he's keeping the car overnight+ to observe discharge sources (electrical bleeding). He thinks the car isn't going to sleep. He thinks it's the digital cluster (but I found a thread that turned out to be the radio). Will see... |

Thank you!!
And yep... KOMBI came up. It wouldn't let the system sleep and stayed on.
So they ordered it and are replacing now. Thanks for chiming in on this man!! We pick up the car Thursday AM. I'll check in again after a week or so to confirm the fix. Quote:
