iDrive / Nav ripoff?

Just saw a new X3 in person for the first time yesterday at the local dealership. Took a look inside, and was instantly appaulled to see the itsy-bitsy iDrive screen. Really? What makes it so bad is that there is plenty of room for the full 9" system that comes in "real" BMWs, but they blanked it off with plastic curtains on each side.

That alone would prevent me from buying an X3.

I take it you are not in the US? I didn't think they offered that one here? Either way, get the upgrade and it does have a "real" 8.9" screen.

I thought most BMWs have a smaller screen unless you go for the Nav PRO option?

I'm in the US. So, there are two size screens offered? Guess I should research the product specs a bit more... is iDrive standard with a small screen, and upgrade to Nav provides bigger screen?

Thanks, that makes better sense. The split screen and full screen is an important feature to me. The one I saw obviously didn't have Nav.

Bingo.

PS Nice to see you over from e90post.com. I remember seeing a lot of your posts when I was over there.

As people have said, you need pro nav. Here's what it looks like in an X3 with split screen (sorry for the poor iPhone quality pic)

It is an expensive option though. You pay for every pixel!

Here in Australia the 6.5" display is standard, but is only used for basic radio and reversing camera. If you choose for the navigation or TV upgrades you get the 8.9" display. I agree it does look weird with the little 6.5"

No but I've got a few good mates from Wales and have enjoyed some quality nights out in Cardiff (and a few crackers in Caerphilly too!) Ahh, The Checkmate. Say no more!

The iDrive/Nav screen we get in the US is a 8.8 inch screen. I was wondering if the nav option included in the technology package in the US is the "pro nav" in the UK. There seems to be more options in the UK such as the audio system which comes in 3 tiers: a base, mid, and pro system; where as in the US they only offer the base and pro.

I have noticed that when I was making a test drive there where much more clouds on the satnav screen. Does the system actually get weather conditions and display the horizon accordingly to the weather outside? (or is this a face palm moment...)

Thats a cracking photo. Makes me wish I could afford those alloys, but they are so expensive. I have never seen Fishguard so sunny. Went camping in September last year to Newquay in west Wales, Temp dropped 10oC as soon as the tents were pitched and hammered it down for 3 nights! With regards to the Pro Sat nav, do the maps update FOC? As for night out Caerphilly, I'd say if it was a great night if you returned with all your limbs intact!

There is a night / day setting on the sat nav and then there is an include satellite option which combines real satellite images with the 3d perspective map. The car has a SIM which reads and displays up to date weather conditions so in theory, the sat nav sky could reflect the weather to a degree. In practice, I think the blue sky was a coincidence but if I ever see a grey sky displayed (and I won't have to wait long in the UK), I'll update you

I wouldn't want it to reflect reality that accurately. Might get depressing.
