30D Economy
Now I've had the chance to put a few miles on the car (2000) I can give you some feedback on economy, a big issue in the UK!!!
I'll start with the bad, it doesn't like short trips when it doesn't get chance to warm up. The best I can get is 31mpg on the school run, a 2 mile trip with no traffic. The other bad situation is fast motorway, mid 30's seems to be about right. Now the good. Best after a slow A road trip was 51mpg at 41mph average and 47mpg for the return at 47mph. There was towns and traffic but I am happy considering it is a 3.0l 4x4. Overall I am averaging 40 but it drops when I play!!!! |

That's pretty darn amazing IMO. I'm averaging 19.3mpg in a 335i over 63K miles. This is in a 3500lbs vehicle. 30mpg (at 70mph) on the highway is about all I can muster. I'll be interested to see how the x3-35i will do, considering it is actually rated to have better mpg than my 07 3 sedan despite being 700 lbs heavier and having a bigger frontal surface area.
Too bad the x3 30D isn't available here

Nearly 18,000km (11,000 miles) ours. Short trips around town getting around 9.5 l/100km (25 USmpg ; 30 Impg). Longer 800km highway trips - getting down to 6.5 l/100km (36 USmpg ; 44 Impg. On these longer trips which I do regularly, the economy has gradually improved from the 6.8 l/100km down to the present 6.5 l/100km.
Reasonably happy with these numbers. Not quite what the official numbers are but with a 1.8 tonne AWD vehicle and with the performance of the 30d engine - I'm not really complaining. Tony |

Feulecononmy with a 30D
Hi all
21,000, average consumption 7.75 litres/100km. The Particulate filter is notregeneratingproperly. Sounds like we need to lock it in 5th gear and drive down highway to get regeneration of the particulate filter as it is not regenerating with all day cruising at 1500/1600RPM. You will have more trouble than us if you drive slow enough to get down into the 6 litres/100KM. KF |

I think that's pretty fair considering a few overtakes and a few hills with a floored pedal. Got 4200km on it now. It's hard to just look at it and not taking it for a spin |

My 30d is showing an average of 35.5 mpg (imperial). That is over its lifetime of 2,700 miles. The current EU economy figures IMO are not worth the paper they are printed on. Minus 10 mpg from any car manufacturer's claimed figures, at the very least.
On the good side the 30d only costs me £165 a year to tax, so that saves about £100 a year on what it probably should be. That means a tank and a half of diesel a year for free for BMW's economy with the truth about their cars' fuel economy.... And I'm OK with that! |

I first became an mpg 'anorak' when I was seeing the Ford Cortina Mk 2 with the 1300 and 1500/1600 GT engines, giving virtually identical real world mpg. Nothing has really changed, unless we drive smaller engine models of similar weight with a lighter style. My son runs an E83 3.0sd, that returns just about 2mpg less than the E83 2.0d manual he was running before. He's driving exactly the same trips, he has a faster, more relaxed car with autobox, and just a 2mpg penalty. That is the reality of something like the X3. HighlandPete |

Firstly I should caveat this with the fact that I don't care about mpg, this is a station run and pleasure vehicle- if I'd worried about mpg I would have bought a boring 20d
That said the following might be of interest- *Small engine big brick. I cannot agree more. The 30d equals or betters my old Q5 2.0TDI on literally every run- cold start station run, evening Kent cruise, long distance motorway trip- always better. A bigger engine strains less with this heavy body if you drive at all 'spiritedly' *long term mpg. I get about 23mpg to the station, 28mpg on a run. But I am impatient and aggressive. Sorry about that. My old man is visiting for the jubilee weekend and I have let him drive it quite a bit (that's role reversal for you ) and I am impressed by what he can do. He doesn't drive slowly but smoothly and calmly. A quick ride towards West Kent and back yesterday (about 15 miles each way on A/B roads) he got... 38mpg!! And today down the M20 he got 35mpg and didn't go much under 90. So very reasonable mpg is attainable with this engine even if you make progress *Manufactures figures. 10mpg under for real world is also my usual reckoning. I agree with the earlier poster- use it as a comparison and simile that you pay road tax for CO2 averages that you clearly get nowhere near! I live this car/engine combo. I fancy a 35d but the improvement doesn't warrant changing. If only they hadnt canned the M- although perhaps there is a chance we'll get a M40d or similar?? Sign me up...

Had another 200 mile run today. This time a little faster, 53mph average & 41mpg overall.
It was a quick trip at times and I can confirm my car is limited to 130mph!!! |

Bringing the topic back to milage...
We now have 14,000 km on the car, mostly city / rural, very few big trips of 100km plus. So far the average is a flatline at 8.6 l/100km, (27.35 mpg), and has been since about the 2000km mark. For a car that does everything we ask of it, including a track session, thats pretty good. On the highway cruising at 110kph, it shows about 6 l/100km or about 39 mpg.

I know initially the X3 had 'H' rated tyres which are rated to 130mph, mine is on 'V' rated (150mph) so I was interested to see where it stopped! |
