X4 35i charge pipe slipping off with JB+ !!

Hi

I have been running jb+ for a month now and i have experienced something strange happened today.

I was cruising normally and i was about to overtake a car in front of me so i put the gear on S and accelerated ( pedal not pushed all the way). when i manually shifted the car shook a little and i hear this loud noise ( seemed like mini explosion) coming from engine compartment. i can feel the car lost power immediately and stopped safely to the side of the road and opened the bonnet. found out that charge pipe was slipped off.

I did not drive my car or tried anything and called bmw road assist and they picked up my car to bmw service center. luckly i was able to disconnect the jb+ and put everything back as it was just to avoid warranty issues.

Did this ever happen to anyone and can my dealer find out that i was running high boost?.

Did this happen because of my JB+ ? and what are the chances it may happen again. I was thinking to upgrade to JB4 after i felt that power and torque increase but have to think twice now.

Happened to my 9000 Turbo some years ago. A bit frightening

Probably you - almost - floored it. Added torque due to added boost= pressure=force. For some reason your plastic pipe was borderline. Possibly not correctly installed.

Have not seen this happen on other tuned BMW:s.

After re-installation should be OK.

Unlikely dealer/system can detect high boost.

Just got a call from BMW and they said the metal ring that holds the pipe to the body is broken off and has to be replaced. The service guy also said that it had happened before but not on new cars (considering mine is still new only 15k Km driven so far). It was covered under warranty and I should have her back after 2 days.

Wonder if your M40i is plastic too. Btw you must be having a great drive with your 360bhp. I have only added around 30bhp with JB+ and I smile when i press that pedal to the floor.

This is actually a common issue for most of these turbo BMW's especially when they're hammered a lot. It's prevalent even in stock vehicles. Its happened to my X3 35i about 3 times already in just 25k miles and the charge pipe had to be replaced each time. I wish BMW didn't use such cheap plastic to make important parts . There's actually aftermarket metal charge pipes available for the 3/5 series but none for our vehicles unfortunately .

There is one offered for X4/x3 35i. I will buy it if it happens again. or maybe i should just buy it now and avoid taking the risk. Here is a link to the product

It seems to be the prudent thing to do - buy the metal pipe, but note that you are talking about two different causes . Metal ring broke and cracked plastic pipe.

M40i need to have higher pressure - same part no?

High humidity in Trinidad? Gives extra boost.

Saudi Arabia should give less boost. You might complain to BMW that your vehicle does not give you the promised power.

I am in between - west coast of Sweden is humid but moderat temperatures.

13,6xx solid miles, hard-driven, over 30+ 1/4 mile drag runs, over 20 roll-racing 30-40mph starting runs, 10 dyno pulls, 0 issues and I understand why it happens.

Your Heat Weather + Pressure + Moving (Weight) = Boom
So as the car is pressuring more boost, more heat (ambient too) and its moving it will happen. Happens to a lot of F30's stock or modded.

I think the X3/X4 are much more sturdy in this regard. My buddy Crashnbrn5 had 3 solid yrs on his X3 35i and drove it harder than 99% other owners.

Good point. after driving for a couple more days I noticed a lack of power. It was not as before (without the tune). Probably dealer played with boost just to avoid this case happens again. Maybe its time to put my JB+ back in

"dealer Played with Boost"

Really? And just what do you think the dealer played with? The dealers are so limited now on the simple coding they can do by BMWNA that it's pathetic. Ask a tech to show you the coding options that the dealer is able to do. Half of them are already on the X4M menu of choices and the other are things like the battery reset. No doo, windows video, etc choices at all for US dealers.

This is a common issue with other BMWs. I put an aftermarket charge pipe in my 335i after tuning it.
