Not a Fan of the Burbles, Farts and Gurgles
I am good with the low-pitch growl of the sports exhaust, but the BF&G's seem silly in a car of this type, especially in the up shifts. Is anyone aware if there is a way to disable the BF&G's in all drive mode settings? Perhaps capping off a vacuum hose?
Thanks.

I take it you have, not yet, bought a M40i?
Then there is one alternative to get the growl you want - without BF&G's. For my 35i, I bought M Performance Klappenshalldämpfer, with two settings - Sport and Track. Track being formally illegal. Operation through Bluetooth and transmitter. There is a video of Russian car with Klappen being dyno-tested in Thread: "Anyone bought Klappen... Edit:I forgot: ín second video you can hear both Sport and Track. To get - about - the same handling performance as M40i I also have H&R. BMW USA has stopped selling 35i. My M40i seems to have lessened the burbles after break in, at least in normal mode. Still does it in sport modes.

That's precisely what I'm saying. I want enhanced performance without the non-performance fluff -- this is why I'm befuddled with "active sound;" engine sounds played through the car's sounds system seems really cheesy to me. I prefer the "stealth" mode.
I'll have to live with the car to ultimately determine my preferences, but I do not expect to be in the comfort or Eco mode often.

I did testdrive a M40i Monday, while my car was in for service.
Sound in Comfort is very good - in Sport a bit over the top for "normal driving". Acceleration and gearshift is - unlike my 35i - very good in Comfort. In Sport there is a "no good" jerk/noise at gearshifts when pushing - my car has more reasonable shifts in Sport. During a fairly short testdrive, I did not feel any difference in steering precision/handling compared to my lowered car. I was unhappy before lowering. |

That may be true, but I believe there are VAC tubes that actuate exhaust sounds. It could be that these tubes may be disabled without affecting the engine tuning. I'm looking into it.

burnout: software induced? I don't get it - if not fake sound?
Duke: VAC tubes actuates exhaust sound? I take it VAC tubes are vacuum tubes? I don't get it. My M Performance exhaust has two valves, which are Bluetooth/vacuum operated, and shortcuts the flow of exhausts in Track - which I can understand. Outside sound in Track mode is more pronounced than M40i, but interior sound is more muffled. I have a nasty suspicion that sound is "artificially enhanced" in M40i, but then it should be possibel to delete. |

By VAC tubes I meant vacuum tubing/lines that operating valves and actuators in the exhaust system to create the sport sounds, burps, gurgles, etc.
Sorry for the confusion.

I have only made a short testdrive with M40i, but from what I read also from M40i owners, there is an immediate difference in soundlevel between Comfort and Sport.
Operating my valves takes a couple of seconds. I am convinced M40i has sound enhancement electronics - not valves, which is OK for me but might be a bit disturbing for purists. |

Very instructive - thanks.
Obviously M40i has it - with different degrees of enhancement in Comfort/Sport. Duke: you could try to get your dealer change enhancement in Sport to Comfort level - or use Comfort - I found gearchange a bit aggressive/uncomfortable in Sport. About 15 years ago I drove a Citroen AMI - 24bhp, on Lotus testtrack with a test equipment which could simulate; Porsche, Ferrari and a Chrysler 440 V-8 SixPack. Quite impressive! |
