Is there anyone here who would be looking to get the M sport wheel, who has heated wheel(248) but NOT driving assistant plus (5AT)?

Something has been bothering me about the wheel part numbers.
There are four different wheels, the four combinations of heat and driving assistant plus: No heat, no driving assistant plus (179) With heat, no driving assistant plus (181) No heat, with driving assistant plus (184) With heat, with driving assistant plus (186) Thing is, 184 and 186 are impossible to find new. I’ve been thinking about the differences between the four. The heat is obvious, there is a heating element and lead wrapped around the wheel. For 184 and 186, it’s not clear to me what the difference is between them and their heat/no heat counterparts. The vibration is handled by an optional bolt on module, not the wheel itself, and the parts catalog makes it look as though the touch sensors embedded in the wheel apply to all four combinations (though I’m not sure what the touch sensor is used for on non driving assistant cars). It’s possible that 179 and 181 are molded such that the slot for the vibration generator is absent, but it would seem idiotic to manufacture two separate wheels just for that when the part/feature is removable to begin with. I’ve seen a picture that seems to indicate that there is a black plastic dummy vibration module in the spot on these wheels, but it isn’t exactly clear. All of this has me rather curious to have a good look at 181, to see if it has both the touch sensor embedded and a slot for the vibration generator. If so, the reason why 184 and 186 aren’t stocked might just be that 179 and 181 work if you add the vibration module. In fact it might even be that you order 179 and 181 to get the dummy module, and the other two have empty spots. If this isn’t the case, then people who have driving assistant plus might have to hunt for used wheels as those are the only ones I’ve found. I’ve been tempted to buy one to have a look, but if the odds are good that someone else will be soon then I’ll just ask for pictures. |

So, at least for the US, there would never be the case where a car is equipped with DAP package and without heat. The other interesting this is that for at least the M40i, I would suspect that most people will max out the packages, so they would include Premium, DA, and DAP - resulting in heat + DAP. Model 186 should be one of the most common types of wheels as a result. I would guess that model 181 would be second most common. Just my $0.02. |

Oh, and now that we have the actual part numbers for the G01, it’s the same situation. I just expect the G01 M sport wheels to be harder to find than the G30 for awhile so it seems worthwhile to sort this out. Last edited by sor; 11-19-2017 at 11:40 PM.. |

That's the infuriating part. I'm sure I'll see some X3 20D M-sport pack with a big ole fat wheel while we're picking up our 360 hp Sports SAV and ours will have that skinny, cheap leather version that's no nicer than the wheel in my Ford.

You can tell a US airbag by its two stage design. Notice the blue plug on the top edge in addition to the black plug in the middle. I believe this is to account for drivers of different sizes/weights, or potentially different types of collisions. The euro ones will only have the one plug in the middle, and if you happen to get one of those (say on a used wheel), you'd need to code the car to handle it.

I haven’t read up on it too deeply, but I believe US safety regulation requires different airbag behavior based on either the size/weight of the person or type of impact, to reduce injuries related to the airbag.

In the meantime a few of us are just retrofitting G30 Series M-sport wheels and coding the airbag. There is a very detailed thread by SOR on this topic. |

No doubt BMW dropped the ball on this steering wheel. It is the only major issue I have with the M40i. Figured I would post this here as a quick and cheap way to remedy the situation until an official change is made/available. As you may all be aware, Sor has a great post on doing a G30 wheel swap.
http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1444289 In the meantime, this cover works for me. It still sucks but it is a lot better than that skinny Sport Steering Wheel. It is quite sad I had to resort to this as I hate the wheel that came with the vehicle. FYI, it is installed backwards and upside down compared to the picture on Amazon and IMO looks and feels better installed this way. I will also add this to my pictures thread for reference. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
