I hear you. Since I turned the X5 in two years early, we had quite a bit of that note go onto the X4 which kept me from getting a lot of options. Keep in mind, the whole point of turning the X5 in early was to reduce monthly expenses. I was hesitant at first about the 2.0 liter mainly because I haven't driven a 4 cylinder since I was in college. I wasn't even convinced during the test drive, but my budget won the argument and I went with the smaller engine. It wasn't until I had a week off from work and got to drive it every day, that I was convinced that the 2.0 is all I really need and is extremely fun to drive, even compared to the 368HP Twin Turbo F150 I had driven for 3.5 years.

I have been in Japan for two years now, probably will be here another 18 months to 2 years, so saving up and building my car now. As for wants versus needs, well, I really, really want a 550i, but since my next job will probably be in a snowy environment, I am picking up an X3....also due to the fact that I cannot afford a 5 series or an X5.
Happy New Years in Japan. I guess you wont drive it much (except when back in USA) until 24 months later. The new 2017 x3 3rd generation should be available in fall 2016. Relax, you have lots of time to get the 550i. I have x5 50i, same 450hp in the 550i, loads of fun.

FYI:
I am living in Japan and ordering a bmw for US delivery. Some may have seen me in multiple forums. I have found my next assignment will be in a wintry destination. As such, I have decided to order a 2015/2016 X3 28i.

I currently own a 2009 528i X Drive, but trading that in for wife's mini-van.

Thanks for any insight/advice.
If you can afford the 35i, do it. You won't be disappointed.

The four banger is okay, but it won't put a smile on your face like the n55 will.

I've been driving a X3 28i loaner for the last few days. I'm really impressed with this thing and how it handled the snow/ice we've had in NYC recently. I've had a 335i in the past and loved the n55 but the n20 with the 8ZF is really an excellent combo. The car is quick off the line and has more than enough tq to move all the weight of the car.

It's not like the previous gen 328 n52 vs 335i n54 where the difference was night and day. Now the difference is like sunset and sunrise. If I had to build a BMW that has a n20/n55 option, I'm going with the n20 all day long.
