N20 engine stalling - anyone else experiencing this?
Our 2013 X3 2.8i (N20 engine) has begun stalling. Happens when you are in D (Drive) and at a complete stop with your foot on the brake. Sometime the engine "sputters" a bit but recovers. Other times the engine "sputters" then dies. Happens when the engine is cold as well as when it's at operating temperature. Doesn't happen every time you are stopped. During a 10-15 minute drive in the city, happens once....maybe twice.
Thought it may have been a bad batch of fuel, so ran a full bottle of Redline (S1) fuel treatment through. Still happens. Since then have bought fuel (always Top Tier 92 octane) at different gas stations to see if it made any difference. Nope. Still happens. So I doubt it's a "bad fuel" problem. I did a search of the forum and checked for service bulletins. Nothing found. Car has 6,500 miles. No mods done to engine. So far the "check engine" light has not been triggered. I plan to take it in to the dealer next week, but wanted to throw this out there to see if anyone else has experienced this. Thanks. |

Uh, are you sure you're not experiencing the auto stop/start function? Aren't N20 equipped X3's equipped with this feature?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the auto stop/start feature has been disabled via programming/coding. So no, the auto start/stop feature is not the issue.

Maybe something went wrong with the coding and it actually isn't deactivated anymore? Otherwise, maybe it is a HPFP issue?

Sputtering and stalling is one of four things - Bad fuel (you've worked through this one, and there's probably enough ethanol in your fuel that adding a bottle of Dry Gas won't help), lack of fuel (maybe a rare HPFP problem), lack of spark, or lack of compression. I haven't heard of this problem before on an X3. You've done the obvious non-dealer things. This is now a dealer issue to diagnose and correct.

I must admit, when I heard people talk about ASS I was wary of having it, but I do not mind it at all. Especially seeing you can force your car to start by taking a little amount of pressure off your brake peddle so its not a problem. The 3.0d is very smooth and quiet - not like the 2.0d tractor engine - haven't heard the petrol versions as not in the UK, but I really do not understand why people hate ASS so much. If you have decoded it then the dealer will run a diagnostic, and all your programming will be wiped when he re-installs the programming, so whether you like it or not - ASS will be working when you next drive the car.
Is ASS really such a problem? BY the way - I don't want to cause offence with my remarks - it is just my opinion - which is what a forum is for. __________________________________________________ _______________ 2013 X3 M-sport Deep Sea Blue, Black Leather, Xenons, DIRAC Professional Sound sytem, Pro Nav, 19" Wheels, Tinted windows, Folding Mirrors, PDC, ASS, DAB Radio, Aluminium trim inc roof bars |

I have just gone thru this issue with my 2013 X3. ~28K miles on the clock. We've been experiencing extremely cold temps in NY lately and the X3 has occasionally stalled 5-6 sec after starting when sitting out in the cold for a long time. At home I park in a garage so this condition usually happens at work where I park outside. I took it in for the brake booster recall and while at the dealer the check engine indicator came on after they started it. Extremely lucky for me that this happened at the dealer. The engine threw two codes (don't know which ones) and they replaced the O2 sensor and the mass airflow sensor. Runs fine since I got it back; no more stalling.

THis also happened to me (2013 x328i). Weather was freezing for an extended time. I guessed it was water in the gas and added a can of dry gas. Never had the issue again. A 2$ fix.

I had this problem intermittently on my MY12 X1 (no ASS until MY13). It never went away. It only threw a code once (when I was driving my wife to the hospital!). The dealer cleared the code and declared the problem solved. I've heard the N20 O2 sensor recall solves it.
