2012 X3 28i with N20???

THIS IS NOT OFFICIAL...

But today as I was picking up my E90 from the service Dept. I over heard a Sales Person telling a \"customer\" that the 2012 X3 28i will have the 4 cylinder engine i.e. N20.
The Sales Person was showing an
X328i to the \"Customer\"

Again I over heard this and is NOT official from BMW NA.

I was at CENTURY WEST BMW in
NORTH HOLLYWOOD Ca.

There is no doubt that the N20 will replace the I6. The only question is when. Europe already has it in X3 20i form. We'll likely only get the 28i version, which is fine with me. But it has not been announced. I've stated on other threads I suspect it won't happen until after the current production run is over in March, though they could probably do it any time, especially since they've already got them on the production line for Europe.

My dealer knows that if he can confirm the N20, he's got an instant sale. He's been trying to get confirmation, but hasn't been able to. At least he's not lying to me to get the sale (yet). My guess is that dealer you overheard was talking out of his @$$.

The only announced N20 cars in the US (AFAIK) are the Z4 and the 528i. Maybe they'll announce the X3 switchover at Frankfurt next week. We'll see.

At least here in So. Cal. Dealers are not giving out quotes in the '12 X3,
I'm waiting to get in line to order MY 2012 X3 and is just hard to get any type of information, and when I over heard the SA talking about the N20 I was surprised...who knows what the truth is, all we can do is wait.

That's stupid. *I* can give a quote on the '12 X3. Cars.com has it with invoice pricing (though they're configurator blows). The prices are already known and production starts this month (Monday I think). Any X3 you order now will be a '12.

SoCal dealers must just have too much inventory of '11s.

Just posting this in case it helps someone. I have been waiting for the N20 X3 for a while now in hopes of getting a more efficient vehicle, and I hoped it would be available as a 2012 from the start. Unfortunately it is not and we could really use the car now, so I went to a dealer to test drive a 35i and get a feel for what an N20 X3 would drive like by testing out a 2012 528i or xi, not sure which it was, but it was with the N20 turbo four and the car is only a few hundred pounds lighter so I figured it would at least give me a sense as to whether I liked it or not. Maybe my problem was that I drove the 35i first, but the N20 did not live up to my expectations. The car was brand new so I had no intention of pushing it and just drove it exactly how I would normally drive. The best I could describe it is that I found the driving experience very flat and unexciting. Light acceleration felt like the car was in too high of a gear, or maybe turbo lag before it spooled up. For example you would be driving at 30 mph and you would very gradually step on the accelerator, and the car would do nothing, it's like it would ignore the input to accelerate until you gave it significantly more gas. Even when I accelerated more aggressively the power seemed very flat without that satisfying surge in power. I know the engine has great specs and power, and I'm sure if you get more aggressive with the throttle it will probably go sufficiently, but it was not what I was expecting. I did drive a 2011 x3 28i with the six cylinder earlier in the year, and I found that drive very satisfying. On a side note the start/stop function was very cool. It was an awesome feeling to come up to a stop light and have the engine shut off knowing that you are not wasting a drop of gas. But otherwise to those of you waiting for an N20 X3, perhaps you should make the same test drive while you can still order a six cylinder X3 28i. As for myself, I'm pretty much sold on power and efficiency of the 35i.

Edit: I just read a post about hesitation in acceleration that describes what I posted exactly, except in a 35i. So it seems like what I was seeing is not related to the engine after all but to transmission software. Who knows. But I would still encourage those waiting for the N20 to check out the new 528i to get a sneak peek at what's coming eventually.

To be clear, the 2012 X3 xDrive28i is not powered by the N20 2.0L I-4 TwinPower Turbocharged engine. It is still powered by the N52 3.0L I-6 engine. BMW has not released official statements regarding when the N20 will make its way to the states in the X3 xDrive28i, but reports suggest that you should expect it to be available for the 2013 model year.

Next time you hear your service department talking, kindly cover their mouths with your hands, and say "shhhhhhhhhhh."

If the 528i, Z4 sDrive28i, and upcoming 328i are any indication, the X3 with the N20 will be dubbed the 28i.

Now if we only knew when this mythical N20 X3 will appear. With 2012 production ending in March, my guess would be 2013 will start production fairly early in the year, perhaps as early as May???

I agree with this, I bet we see the N20 in May and it will be a 2013 model, 2012's will have a very short production life. BMW might have done this if they had an inventory of old engines they wanted to move? At first I was going to wait until May and try to get the N20 engine but caved and ordered the 35i which is in production as I type this. I know I will not regret the choice. I think the only real reason to wait is if there is a monster coming out, like the X3M or 35D, both should eventually be available but I don't think either will be for at least a year if not two and thats too long to wait. Plus I doubt they will put the Euro spec 35D in our X3s, could you imagine them offering a 313 HP X3 Diesel and the X5 Diesel only gets 260 HP?

I will enjoy the 35i for 3-4 years then maybe think about picking up a slightly used X3M or a new 35D if it has 300+ HP like in europe.
