Euro X3 35i Acceleration Graph
There is a You Tube video of a 35i flat out acceleration run (Sport Mode). This appears to be a pretty quick 35i.
Since I haven't seen a published acceleration curve for a 35i, I did a frame-by-frame analysis and extracted the speed/time curve. The values are from the speedometer readings, so if this is a typical 35i, they are probably about 1.5% to 2% higher than the real speeds. This 35i reached an indicated speed of 255kph in 69 seconds (in 6th gear). Note, the plotted time is not the You Tube video time, but is the actual time from the start of acceleration as indicated by the speedometer. Graphed data points are at 1 sec. intervals up to 29 seconds. |

Very difficult to map from a video.

I can't speak for the accuracy of the numbers above, but i like watching the video, watching the RPM and shift points when you put it in double sport mode (both the button and the shift lever) and flat out floor it. never gets past 6th but i am not surprised since 7th and 8th are both overdrive.
The US spec cuts off at what 130MPH and speeds closer to 100MPH could land in jail... also, when that X3 really gets rolling, anyone else notice the wind noise is louder than the N55? to reduce drag, get in an M3.

It is fun to watch the tenth kilometer digit clicking off once every second. It's too bad the fuel consumption gauge is pinned. It would be interesting to know the fuel rate at 150 mph. I had a Subaru Legacy Turbo once that was boosted to 16psi. At full throttle the Subi digital fuel rate display read 1.8 mpg. Last edited by Lotus7; 10-16-2011 at 01:02 PM.. |

Must be a lucky German owner who is able to max out the speed without risk of a ticket. The only risk appeared to be holding a video cam whilst driving at 250k, at least you can't identify the car/owner or else they might get a ticket.....

The initial 335i coupes were road tested at around 4.8s to 60. They were found to be around 340 bhp, possibly BMW said 306 bhp so as not to upset M3 buyers.....and the reality is that on the road they are faster than the M3, on the track the M3 wins out.
The X3 is heavier but it's also 4 wheel drive so depending on the current 35i engine maybe the figures are not that far out. My E93 335i was VERY rapid, even with the vert added weight.

Just watched the 3.0D, link on the same page. Looked like 0 - 60 = 6 sec, 0 - 100 = 16sec. Not bad for a 4x4 that does around 40 (uk) mpg!
Hit's the limited at 210km/h, so the speedo on that one is accurate. |

For the 2.0D I estimate it was about 8.3 to 60 and 23.5 to 100mph.

With the SAP or M-sport the limiter is placed at 150 mph. 150 mph = approx. 241 kph. So maybe an idealistic speedometer. I've seen other cars exceed their claimed electronic limit for whatever reason.

Edit: Now that I'm not on my smart phone, let me explain my comment some more. 1) The M3 has a better suspension set up. 2) The 335i "electonic diff" is a poor excuse for a diff. 3) The M3 has clearly superior power when on cam. 4) The 335i has a very broad power band, not so much on cam but on turbo. 1500rpm to 6500 rpm Of course it's possible to drive on public roads the way we can on a race track but 98% of the time points 1) and 2) are irrelevant - on public roads. Even the lesser 335i has so much grip that it's very difficult to exceed it's limits on public roads. Ok, if you find some deserted US or Oz road so you can use it as your private race track... It's point 4) that for me is the clearest difference between the cars, for sure peak power of the M3 is superior but the sheer driveability of the 335i on most public road journeys actually makes it quicker (marginally). Put the cars on the track and the deficiencies of the 335i become apparent very quickly.

Thereafter we differ. The M3 is not a Daily Driver though, so if thats were you were going I would have to submit and agree in general.

Your 35D will be tremendous. I'm really enjoying the 30D, the extra you'll get will be great to have. Even with the 30D I don't feel I've lost too much vs the 335i, though of course it's a diesel and it's character is not the same as a petrol. I've got a loan 318i Touring while they experiment with the wind noise issues I have on my X3. The 3 series now feels so crude and toy-like.

Torque should be amazing with the new engine. Even with the 30D when I drive up a normally troublesome steep hill near home the car launches up it saying to me "what hill?".
