Rear Brakes
Hey all. I normally lurk in the e90 forums, but we just picked up a 2013 CPO X3 for the Mrs. It's only got 34,000km on it, but the service reminder says it needs rear brakes in 5000km. I don't think I've ever heard of a vehicle needing brakes before 40,000km. Is this normal or do I go back to the dealer and see what's up?

check your brake pads manually. the rear is easy to check, google it.
if it looks fine then i wouldnt worry about it and let the dealer reset the cbs before it hits 0 |

Hello. It's perfectly normal to change the rear brakes at this time. I drive very aggressively and I use the brakes hard, and mine were changed at 26,500 miles. Someone that has a light foot, may get 40,000. That is my 2 cents. Good luck with your new X3 |

The X3 puts more bias at the rear in order to keep the front end from pitching forward during braking. Additionally, the rear brakes are used for traction control. Though the on board computer likes to jump the gun a little bit and call for pad changes earlier than normal.
My dad's 2011 X3 is almost ready for a second swap of rear pads but the fronts are still from factory. |

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like the brakes might actually be getting close to the end of their life. I would have though this would have been caught in the CPO inspection and I see that brakes are not covered by the included maintenance. I'll give them a look over myself and see how close they are.

I, normally, drive non-aggressively, and have rarely seen brake dust on rear wheels - until X4.
My take is that the torque vectoring system is braking inner wheels - front and rear - to get better steeringrespons. I have also seen a tendency that the inbuilt "seviceprogram" will push for unnecessary actions e.g. brake pads. |

Definitely check the actual pad thickness. As has been said, there is more brake work from rear brakes these days, along with the CBS regime often having an over zealous countdown.
Just yesterday my F11 was in for service and rear pad figures were clearly way out, my own check showed there was an issue. The garage checked the pad thickness and reset the CBS for the rear brakes. So instead of 7,000 miles with over 8mm pad thickness, I now have 34,000 miles on the CBS menu. HighlandPete |
