Too bad they didn't show when configuring the winter package......

Are you thinking these for winter, stock for summer, or vice versa?

My suggestion on winter wheels is buy wheels that do not have complicated spoke patterns that will trap fresh snow or slush. A simple 5-spoke wheel should work best. Also make sure the spokes are robust enough to support the wheel if you hit a pothole without bending the rim.

I got a set of 18" Rial Como wheels for winter on my 328 coupe and they are, regrettably, no longer round. Couldn't take the harsher conditions, ice, ruts, etc. Next time I'll try to find something a little more durable.

My view on all alloy wheels:

1. Black or dark grey to hide the BMW trademark brake dust
2. Five narrow / symetrical spokes for easy cleaning (see brake dust)
3. Forged alloys - never cast - strength and less weight.

Stick with thses golden rules and live a long and happy, stress free life.

It they look good - bonus points.

Tall order. The only 18" wheels that I found at tirerack that are forged were the BBS LM @$890/wheel and the HRE R40 @$1170/wheel. Are the OEM wheels forged? At $1300-$1400 a set I doubt it. One thing that led me to turn in my '08 335XI rather than purchase it is the propensity for the run flats to break when hitting an obstacle. They don't lose air but the sidewall ruptures. With my Blizzaks (non run flat) and cheap wheels that I use in the winter, the rims of the wheels have lots of flat spots where the wheel bent instead of the tire breaking. As I continue shopping for winter wheels, I don't think I'll spend the money for forged wheels.

There are at least 3 other 18" wheels suggested by Tirerack for the X3 and they're not forged. Total package for wheels and tires was around $2k. Take another look.

I agree. There are plenty of choices for cast wheels. Only 2 for forged wheels. The nice thing about getting the whole package from tirerack is that the tires will come mounted and balanced on the wheels with the TPM installed.

For winter conditions I would never bother with forged. The wheels will get dinged every which way between November and March regardless. If they get so badly out of round you just toss them and replace the wheel at about $300 a pop.
