3rd party backup camera for X3
I wonder if the wiring is in place to plug the camera into the factory wiring. I donno if it would be an inexpensive alternative to the factory part.

It's a great price and would be really useful. But we need an expert!
The wiring loom is probably in place - but from watching the National Geographic Megafactories film of the X3 manufacture in Spartanburg I know that canvas bags of wiring looms are prepared off the line and delivered to the correct car as it is built (I thought heating them and delivering them to the line hot to make the wiring easier to lay was such a simple and neat solution). They would not need to match bag to car if they used a standard loom so it probably has various components depending on options. Some such as left hand drive or right hand drive are obvious, but in this case? I have the rear parking sensors which activate the iDrive screen with a graphic, there's a good chance it is in the same optional cable. But maybe it is in the top view camera cable bundle...which I don't have.. The ad says: You must need a Av input or Multimedia interface(Auto Change when "R") for this Camera on your car! * Turning this into English is tricky, but maybe "auto change when R" refers to the way the iDrive screen switches to parking sensor mode when R is engaged. In which case I have it. But as I said, we need an expert.

I have emailed the eBay seller with the following questions. I will post any reply I receive.
'I have a F25 X3 (MY2012 built 11/2012) 30D M Sport. It has the standard Front & Rear Parking Sensors which are activated when Reverse is selected. The Display then shows an outline of the front and rear with Yellow & Red area highlighted as the vehicle approaches an obstruction with warning sounds. The vehicle does not have a Rear View Camera nor Top View. Does this just plug into the existing wiring loom? Is a software update needed to make the camara display appear on the i Drive display when reverse is selected? Does the unit fit into an existing hole in the vehicle? I do not understand your statement 'You must need a Av input or Multimedia interface(Auto Change when "R") for this Camera on your car!' - Can you explain the statement please?' Roger |

Almost certainly would need coding/software change. There may be Indys that would offer the whole package but to get OEM equivalent won't be cheap.

I contacted the seller with a couple of questions and I didn't get a very intelligible response.
There was positive feedback from a person with a f25. I contacted this person but didn't get a response. |

Looks like there is an official F25 retrofit kit from BMW, match your spec to the correct entry on the link below and phone your dealer with the part code to enquire about cost inc fitting...
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...26&hg=66&fg=95 If they can do it no doubt a quality independent can cheaper.

BMW Parts...
I always err on the side of caution with third party electronics like this. There seems to be a few red flags. If you really want the option, I'd cough up the cash to get it done right (at a dealer).

The other day I was reading though a thread about options people wish they had selected when ordering the car. A few people mentioned the camera.
My car will have the park distance control (or whatever it is called) and that feature should help avoid any mishaps. I don't see the benefit of the top down camera and I think I'd only use the rear camera. I still have a bit of time before my order goes in (I think) so I still have time to change my order. |

Top view...
I have the top view (and rear)... I pretty much just use the rear view. The top down view is nice to impress... whoever, but practically, I like the non-distorted view with the rear camera. To be honest, I haven't really tried it that much. I think it would be helpful when parallel parking to see a curb. But I haven't really tried that much. I should! I shall...

Top View is great for all kinds of parking. Parallel, standard garages, garages with pillars and the like, close frontal approaches, sharp or complex corners. I use it all the time.

+1 Top view option great for the extra tire and rim protection when parking near kerbs - the limits of the car are clearly visible

Having just spent £280/$450 having two badly kerbed alloys on my Q5 factory refurbished prior to sale, I am 100% sure my investment in top view will pay for itself!

I was just 1 day too late. (car was already in build) Topview cannot be retrofitted was the word from the Factory - I was very dissapointed. My Dealer allowed me to place another order including Topview. Rest assured its worth it and the extra 5 week wait was too... |

Well I've come to the realization that the $700 price for the top down/ rear view camera at the time of order was a good deal.
I should have spend the money then... doh Parts alone.

I just had a rear view camera installed on my 530. You guys may want to contact modmynav.com in Chicago to see if their solution will work on the x3 also.
