Cross Bar options other than BMW?

Looking for alternatives to the over-priced BMW OEM parts. Any suggestions?

We are planning a road trip and I am really uncomfortable leaving for an extended trip without a spare. Tempted to see if I can fit one in a large cargo box on top of the car....not the best solution, but ...

The aftermarket ones are more expensive lol. Well except that Atera brand.

X3valk,

Interesting idea. I am a first time BMW owner (ordered an X3, but not delivered yet) and had similar concerns about accessories (prices are high) as well as the run flat tires.

One option that I have been looking into that may help you is trying to purchase authorized BMW accessories on eBay. I've found you can get them for as much as 30% off. That makes them less over priced. Just a thought.

Yakima crossbars will fit. They have a tower that fits the X3 side rails.

I just tried Yakima's website. Their fit tool doesn't show an X3 compatible foot/tower yet.

In the US I think your only choices are BMW or Thule.

I just rechecked their site, and it told me they don't have towers to fit the 2011 side rails (only first gen X3). Don't even think about trying 2012 (though they do show support for 2012 3er, which doesn't exist...).

I have tried many crossbars, the wierd inner angle and the lack of a place to grip limits the after market options, i was toying with the idea to put roof lights like an offroader

I have tried the Yakima crossbars from my RDX on a 2011 X3, and they fit.

This is a newer version of what I have on the RDX (was called the Double-Cross tower when I bought):

http://yakima.com/shop/racksystems/f...rails/railgrab

It's pretty generic, and should work on almost any vehicle with factory side rails. I would assume it's similar to the Double-Cross.

Worst case, take the X3 to a bike, canoe, or ski shop that sells Yakima, and ask to try the Rail-Grab towers on your side rails. That way you can be 100% sure before buying.
