Exclamation BMW Recall: 2010-2012 X3 for VANOS Issue (6 cylinder models)

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW NA Recalling 156,137 Cars for VANOS Issue
41
COMMENTS

BMW is recalling a 156,137 vehicles, both luxury cars and SUVs, to make sure bolts holding a component in their six-cylinder engines don't break loose and cause stalling or engine damage.

BMW says it has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that in rare cases, bolts holding the variable camshaft timing unit may come loose or break, causing the engine to go into a "safe mode." If the problem continues, it can lead to stalling, engine damage – and it may not start.

Drivers will know of a telltale sign of trouble when the "check engine" or "service engine soon" light illuminates. BMW says they need to contact a dealer for service immediately. If the car stalls, they should get over to the side of the road and call for a tow.

The problem is confined to 2010 to 2012 vehicles with the popular inline six-cylinder engine. Those vehicles being recalled include:

2010-12 1 Series
2010-12 3 Series
2010-2012 5 Series
2010-12 5 Series Gran Turismo
2012 6 Series
2010-2012 X3 crossover
2010-12 X5 crossover
2010-12 X6 crossover
2010-12 Z4 sports car

I've always thought the vanos was loud on our X3, wonder if its from the loose bolts.

It does not state that it's just the 2.8. It's only states "The problem is confined to 2010 to 2012 vehicles with the popular inline six-cylinder engine."

They say the recall affects 2010-2012 X3. I think 2011 is in that range.

Another site has it affecting the N55 turbo engine which the 3.5 has. It doesn't seem to be affecting the non- turbo 6 cyl in the 2.8 x3. I went to the BMW site and input the last 7 digits of my vin and there was no recall for my car. I have a 2012 X3 2.8.

If you have a 2012 X3 2.8 you dont have a I6 engine, you have the Turbo I4 right?, the recall is only for 6 cylinder engines. The recall isnt in the systems yet as my SA said, we'll have to wait a bit to see all the engines covered.

No, I have the non turbo I6 which was replaced by the turbo 4. I preferred the non turbo without the auto stop/start. Turbos produce way too much heat for my liking (even though every car is heading that way) and i don't like this auto stop/start. I don't care what anyone says. It can't be good for the car. Anyway, from what I have been reading, BMW's ASS was quite rough. I own this and plan to keep it for a while after the warranty ends. the less to go wrong, the better (not that it is a good prediction that something won't go wrong). I have no regrets either.

So when did the turbo 4 cylinder start, I thought it was 2012, was it mid model year 2012 or 2013?

28i switched to the 4cyl turbo in 2013 2011 and 2012 are the 6cyl non-turbo. My orig question was whether the VANOS engine is both turbo and non-turbo, guess i will find out in a few weeks - if i get a recall notice I will take in it not too worried about it.

Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC

SUMMARY:
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 128i Coupe, 128i Convertible, 328i Sedan, 328i xDrive Sedan, 328i Coupe, 328i Convertible, 328i Sports Wagon and Z4 sDrive 30i, 2011-2012 135i Coupe, 135i Convertible, 335i Sedan, X5 xDrive 35i, and X6 xDrive 35i, 2011 335i xDrive Sedan, 335i Coupe, 335i Convertible, 528i Sedan, 535i Sedan, 535i xDrive Sedan, X3 xDrive 28i, and X3 xDrive 35i, 2010 X3 xDrive 30i, and X5 xDrive 30i, 2012 640i Coupe, and 640i Convertible and 2010-2012 535i Gran Turismo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the bolts that secure the housing for the variable camshaft timing adjustment (VANOS) unit can loosen over time and may possibly break.
CONSEQUENCE:
If the bolts loosen or break the engine may have reduced power or stall. An engine stall increases the risk of a crash.
REMEDY:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the four VANOS housing bolts for both VANOS units (intake and exhaust), free of charge. In addition, owners of approximately 170,172 model year 2010-2012 BMW vehicles equipped with inline 6 cylinder engines not covered by this recall, will receive an extended warranty to address this condition. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Can someone who received the letter check their VIN in the website. I have a 2011 X3, but no recall for my VIN and no letter (yet).
