Fording depth: 2011 vs. 2012

I was just on another F25 forum and the issue of fording depth came up. The manual for 2011 says max depth is 11.8 " vs. for 2012 the depth is 19.6 ".

What gives? Was BMW just being overly cautious for 2011?
If anyone (Lotus) knows, many of us would love to have the facts.

TIA

As you can see in this test, German magazine states it is 500mm:

Best bet is to hop on realoem.com and start looking at the intake and breathers from trans/diff and see if there are different part numbers.

How do you measure the "fording depth"?

Do you have the rest of the test. Would be interesting to see performance figures and the final verdict.

Drive through water, when it stalls you've exceeded the limit.

Right, 50 mm or 19.6 " for the 2012. What is the difference Between 2011 and the '12?
Don't say the fording depth

There is contradicting data regarding the fording depth, the spec data in thread titled "2011 BMW X3 (F25) - OFFICIAL Info, Tech Specs, Wallpapers, Videos, Press Release" stated wading depth is 500mm, but in the manual, it stated no driving into water deeper than 30cm/300mm.
Can someone with 2012 models confirm whether the 2012 manual stated 500mm or is it still 300mm?
I'd say BMW is just adding additional protection so people don't drive across deep water, or maybe they just say 300mm to show the X5 is more capable off road at 500mm.

I downloaded the x3 2012 manual from the BMW USA website and it does state 50cm(19.6 "). 2011 states 30cm(11.8 in).

I wonder if nothing has changed, but the marketing strategy. Maybe BMW was being *very* conservative for 2011, but increased the fording numbers to compete with the evoque's numbers.

I believe the Performance Center goes through about 18" with the X3.
So it apparently can. I don't know if the '11 was less or if they changed anything.
